Oh please. Every second of every day hundreds of people are being hurt, maimed, killed, or stricken with disease. Even the most bleeding heart of you can't give a flying crap about all of them. Unless it's in an orphanage or something, if I see a big fire I think "ooo, cool" long before I think "I hope everyone is all right". It's human nature, stop pretending it's not.
That's sad. People's safety is the first thing I think of when I see something like this. Yeah, fire is cool, but not when it's feeding off something someone else has worked hard for.

Now now, I didn't think that. Well, at least if I did, I didn't post it. ;)

Did you take that with a 70-200?? I'm a total amateur on this, but how did you manage to get the whole scene in focus (near and far)?

The aperture (f-stop) was set at f8. Had I set it to F2.8, the firetruck would have been in focus and the background would be blurred out. I did focus on the firetruck for the shot.

Say for instance, you see a photo of a model on the beach. If the background is blurred, they use a lower f-stop (lower #). If everything is in focus, they use a higher one. (hmm, do i have that backwards???) Anyway, the lower the f-stop the shallower the depth of field. The higher the #, the greater the depth of field. There are other variables to consider when adjusting the aperture though, but too much to get into.

    Quick example:

See how the gymnast and the beam is in focus and the background is blurred? I shot that (and all gymnastics photos) at f1.4.

    Got it?

*drools at the thought of the lens* How do you like the vr feature? I've never really used a lens with it but I could see it being very very handy for indoor shooting.

Cool shot. Makes me realize I need to carry my camera around a lot more to capture these spur of the moment things. ;)

Haven't did any VR testing. I just leave it on when I shoot. The only real indoor sporting events I do indoors, the maximum aperture of f2.8 is still not enough. I need to go down to f1.4 with my 85mm prime. Most of the shots on my site (gymnastics) were shot with that lens. It's quite amazing! The 50mm 1.4 is equally amazing and I'll use that with my D70 backup camera for events.

    No substitute for great glass!

Nothing beats a trained eye, Ted! Good police work. However, I am somewhat surprised that you missed the two suspects in the right portion of the photo. I'd say it's the slum lord congratulating the arsonist for a job well done, but I'm just an amateur. ;)

Nice addition from the Floyd cover.
