I need help diagnosing a problem I'm having with one of my RT2000i speakers. The high and mid tones sound flat and muffled compared to the other speaker. Could this be caused by a bad crossover?

    Hello,
While not impossible, crossover damage is fairly rare. You would want to make sure the two binding post jumper plates are firmly in position linking the upper and lower pairs of posts. If this seems to be satisfactory the probable cause is a damaged tweeter and driver. You can test this by removing both from the non-working speaker and try playing them (at low volumes) directly powered by your receiver.

    Ken,

I made sure the binding posts jumper plates were tight and connected the tweeter directly to the receiver. The tweeter sounds fine. Also did the same with the mid-range speaker and it sounds fine as well. Switched out the tweeter and mid-range between the other good speaker and this speaker in question and the problem remained with this speaker. I also hooked up the speaker directly to the receiver (the speaker wires run through the walls) and again the mid and high tones are flat. Anything else I can check?

    Thanks for you help.

    Hello,
Well, you've pretty much narrowed it down to the crossover, which is located on the other side of the mid range driver. There should be some internal damping material which pulls out of the cabinet. There should be four screws holding it onto the back of the cabinet.
How long have you owned the speaker and are you the original owner?
    Regards, Ken

I bought them summer 2000 from Circuit City. BTW Circuit City is refusing to repair them. Say they are too old and out of warrenty.
