Who uses DSP (Digital Signal Processing) or any other types of enhancing?

Just state wether or not you use a DSP or the DSP functions on your receiver and why you use them.

Personally, I have not been fond of my Yamaha's DSP, but just today tried to use it again and found that it really opens up the sound. I will continue to fiddle.

Thanks for any and all replies.

I'm with BDT, those are to be avoided at all costs. They actually scare me, I cringe when I get to close to selecting a DSP option.

No! Don't hit that DSP button unless you use Cerwin Vega speakers and a Panasonic receiver! I am very annoyed by the fact that my Acurus even supports this heresy! If you need to use this function then chances are you need a real system. I'll go a step further to say if you enjoy this feature then you probably do not deserve a real system and are generally tone deaf.

Nope. Except 5ch stereo, which I then disable the center.

You HT dudes are funny. You sound like you are disgusted with dsp (DIGITAL signal processors). Yet probably over 90% of you guys only have digital stuff. Should take a poll to see how many of you guys have anything analog (ie. tape deck, vcr, PHONO).

I do have a vcr dust collector. Why the hell would I want analog, that's so 70's, history, out of date, a dead format that sounds like she-it. That otta ruffle some feathers.

There's a difference between digital surround modes that are the intended sound of what you're listening to & those that aren't. I like DD 5.1 & DTS for movies, but don't see the need for the half dozen to 35 or so that come with different rcvrs, depending on the brand or model. If the DVDs I want are all rented, I may rent a tape, in which case I like PLII. A top-notch turntable, vacuum tube amp, or reel-to-reel tape deck may sound great, but I have a certain amount of room & a certain amount of income, & I'd rather try to get decent CD/DVD picture & sound, because it's more convenient for someone who isn't able to go for a real "high-end" setup.

If I had a house I might use one or two of the settings on my HK, but in my apt. 5ch stereo is fine for regulart TV/Audio listening.

I agree, most of the DSP modes are crap.

I'll occasionally listen to the Logic 7 Circuitry on my HK. Seems to muffle the center too much.
Dolby Pro Logic when watching movies not broadcast in 5.1 from direct TV seems much better than Logic 7.

Direct TV, really pisses me off though when not broadcast in 5.1... What the hell am I paying for anyway?

Vmax, near and far or Hall1&2??? Sounds like, as Ron would say SHE-IT! Lota hipe in these features, thats why I did not buy the Sony. Too many DSP's just gets confusing.

When I bought my receiver, I thought that was the new and best thing since coolade? But the only time I use anything except "effects off" is watching a DVD. At first I thought the 5 channel stereo was good, but that didn't last long. It is OK if you are having a large crowd over or a party, but I think listening to music the plain old 2 channel is the way for me? But I'm an aging old ****? :D

Analog is greatness, what do the 'digital' guys think their DAC's do to that digital signal anyway?..... Straight analog, one less 'jump' in the chain.....

Not saying I plan on giving up my CD player anytime soon, but that turntable man, melts me like buttaahh

That's not entirely true. You still need to convert the storage medium to an analog (electrical) signal. So is it really one less jump?

For all intents and purposes, realitively speaking, as I see it, as the debate continues, factoring in the subjectiveness, taking into consideration a certain amount of room for user error, and with certain interconnects, and especially with a passive pre, I would say yes, its one less jump..... You follow?

    Cheers,

When watching DirecTV, I use the Denon 3801's MATRIX mode unless they are broadcasting in Dolby Digital.
When listening to music, I switch it all off and go straight from the DVD player analog out - to preamp - to amp - to SDA speakers.
When listening to DVD-A, I use the external inputs and let the DVD-A player do all the magic.

I use logic 7 and music 7 on my Lex for everything. With a 7.1 setup. you will be amazed at what the Lex can do, especially with bass enhance activated. IMHO, Logic 7 always sounds better than 2 channel stereo. I just make sure I turn the center down a little for music.

Man I think most of you are just afraid to fiddle with those little buttons on the remote. I LOVE my DSP modes. I had it on the old Sony reciever and when I upgraded because of the purchase of the Polk Rt800i's, I didn't buy seperates because I couldn't find a preamp for seperates that had the DSP modes the Onkyo reciever did. Hey guys if you like it without it that's cool but don't be afraid to fiddle. I read one of the responses that said the center was too muffled in DSP mode, that's why if you fiddle more that most DSP recievers have width expanders as well as volume controls for each speaker. And aw hell if you play around and hate it there's always the old default button.
I know there's pureists out there( and that's cool) but I don't know anyone with a perfect sound room, every recording is different, some downright suck, and sometimes, especially in music mode the Polk's are just a little too flat for me. DSP takes care of all of these things......for me.

Ya right fessup. I use 6.1 on all movies at the very least. Some music sounds good on 6spk. setup and different modes for satillite t.v. Like LIVE for sporting events. Most new recievers even let you set the reverbs and such.
