Im a Raleigh man myself. Theyre not as well known as a Specialized or Trek but for the money theyre hard to beat. Generally, youll get the drivetrain of a much more expensive bike on a Raleigh.

My $600 M80 has a LX/Deore drivetrain and you usually cant find those on any bike under $800. Whats also cool, is that not everybody has one.

I also like Fuji a lot too but mainly for sentimental reasons.

I have a Trek Fuel 80, which nowadays is a more feature rich bike than when I bought mine 2 or 3 years ago, but it's also gone up in price. The only issue I have wiht my bike has been some chain rub on the derailer, which was fixed with some minor adjustments. I also got a speedometer added, which I think is an absolute MUST unless you're just riding through the neighborhood occasionally

Love my Gary Fisher. The thing has lasted me years with nary a problem. Not quite as well-known a name as the Treks and Canondales of the world but a great bike.

What's your budget? I've got a Cannondale F400 and love it. Go to your local bike shop and try out a few bikes. Stay far, far away from x-mart stores. I've heard lots of good things about Kona and Specialized.

Many good bikes in that price range. Trek, Specialized, Cannadale , Giant are the brands I like. Even GT makes nice under a grand hard tails.

Look at the GT Avalanche 1.0 disc. Very nicely setup and built well. The Specialized Rockhoppers are excellent bikes. Probably the best looking as well. The Cannadales F series are very nice. I have a few friends who ride them. Solid well balanced Bikes. The Giants are very nice but seem to be made for shorter people. They seem a bit short from seat to bars. Maybe it was just the one I rode,it was a Rainer. Nice bike but It wasn't for me. It could be for you.

I ride alot and find a Hardtail not for me anymore. I'm going full suspension for my next bike. They don't beat you up as bad as a hardtail. I like the Specialized FSR COMP and the Trek Fuel 7 and 8. I have not decided on which of the 3 I like the best. Then the Cannadale Lefty Ii like as well but the one I looked at was like 3 grand.Alittle more then I was to spend on my next bike. If i can stay around 2 grand or so, I would be cool with that.

Good luck shopping for a bike. It's alot of fun. Ride them all. I do.Get measured 2. Some bikes you may be a medium and some a large etc etc etc. The size is Important for your comfort. I ride a Large In GT and Specialized but the Trek the Medium felt better and the bike dude thought it was a better fit.

I used to sell bikes in my previous life and I have owned everyrthing from a $300.00 mountain bike to a $2500 road bike and my favorite is my little Specialized Rockhopper that I have now. Juat a nice simple little bike but whatever the price range I recommend Specialized.

Specialized bikes are just built well. there worth every penny they ask for them. You get everything you pay for there. If I had the extra money I would buy both the Specialized FSR comp and the Trek Fuel 8.

I have owned my Rockhopper FSR Comp for almost five years now. It was the best value in full suspension cross country bikes at the time. The only things that I have had to upgrade over the years are the seatpost, handle bar and pedals. The bike has seen some very difficult trails in it's lifetime, including one week riding in and around Mammoth Lakes Ca. on some of the roughest trails I have ever seen and it still feels very solid. Specialized really
know how to screw bikes together. It's also a plus that my bike is one of the nicest looking bikes on the trail, even today.

crazy gonzo if you want to hear something funny
i was rideing my new bike today then i decided to chck out my pld treck it felt like i was rideing sideways like well at not strait i think the fraim is twisted or something on the old bike i did bend the rims and the fork in the treck so i guess binding the fraim is not far off.

the olny bike i could have upgraded from there was a full supenshion bike with lower grade compounts.

and the bike shop i went to is one of the few reputable shops around here. plus i have bought from them for years.

i got a 3 year free tire repair and some other things. i was told to take it in in 3 months to have everything ajusted. i will get some pics up tomarrow

Trek's have a lifetime frame guarantee so if yours is damaged you can get it replaced or repaired under warranty.

Yep, I don't think the price has changed much over the years. I've got the pro edition with disc and they're listed at $710.

    Ah! Platform pedals!

You gotta give the clipless a chance man. Once you get used to them, you're lamost DOUBLING your power, because you can pull the pedal with your upstroke. Maybe something like this, and you can get shoes that look pretty normal for really cheap.

Do all of you guys wear biking shoes? What's the difference?

The difference is huge when you're on the trails. i would say there's two main arguments for them :
    1. More power, because you basically move your leg in the entire circular motion, and you're pulling or pushing on the pedal the entire time, not just the downstroke. Especially useful when climbing.
    2. No slipping off the pedals. You know when you hit a bump, and your foot flies off and you end up wit a face full of handlebar? That doesn't happen anymore.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I'm speaking out of ignorance here, not critical of the idea of bike shoes. Just to be clear. :D

Thanks for the info, I'll have to check them out. I wonder if I would even be able to get a pair, though. I wear a 14 or a 15 for shoes. :o

Platform pedals are the preferred pedal for trials and extreme technical riders-

I've always ridden with mongoose or GT platform pedals. Usually you have to go to a BMX shop to get them.
