yeah I pay an extra $40-60 in gas. What can you do? Deal with the heat a bit or turn off the pool pump on days you know you won't swim.

I do not know about the USA, but in Canada anything you can fire without electricity is a better deal. I know people that have totally revamped their homes to reduce electrical requirements as much as possible. Do you guys have any programs that will assist home owners on energy conservation? In Canada there are rebate programs to help you use energy more efficiently. Any state or federal assistance programs? What is the most economical energy source in Florida?

Actually in some provinces (No need to mention the one) they export so much electricity to the USA that it is not economically feasible to have an all electric home. No need to mention the provincial gov’t here. DAH!

The only electric carrier in my area is becoming deregulated in 2007 and there is talk of rate increases around 40-60%. Of course the electric company is playing it off as now they can finally improve service, etc. They have had a rate freeze for 5 years and still make obscene profits.

No one is trying to deny them a profit, but come on w/o deregulation the costs will be out of control. That's what happened to cable and the cost sky rocketed until satellite TV and DSL became a popular option.

I for one am very concerned at what electricity rates will be next year. Petroleum products are off the scale now. Pretty soon I'll have to get another income just to pay for electricity and gas while maintaining my current lifestyle.

To some it may be a minor thing but the cost of everything is going up at an alarming rate and I don't see it subsiding anytime soon. It used to be the cost of this or that went up but most things stayed steady. Now almost everything has gone up in cost.

Maybe I'm just ultra sensitive, but my wallet is thinner than it ever has been. It seems even in college I had more disposible income. Well, maybe not, but it sure feels that way soemtimes :)

    Thanks for letting me vent

I have a very small apt. in so. ca.

gas bill is .95 per month at this time. only thing gas is the wall heater and i have the friggin pilot light off! Guess i have to help pay postage.

electric bill, 20 bucks a month until i started running fans since it warmed up a little..

in a deranged way.. i could look at it as a perk to working 12+hours in an a/c office.

I pay about $140/month for gas (budget) and between $70 and $120 per month electric, with air conditioning. I have a 2900 ft2 house, 12" insulation in the ceiling. Windows are 48 years old single pane glass. Three sets of wooden French doors. No drapes over the windows. I am going to replace the window and doors this year. This should knock down my energy bills a few bucks and make the house a little warmer, at the cost of a $20K investment. You don't have to have a Harvard Business school MBA to figure out the paybak is poor. I may be a litle more comforatble in certain spots in the house. I would rather buy a few high current Class A amps for heat. Lower cost, more heat and a world class group of sound systems. My wife isn't buying my logic.:(

Last month's power was $100. This month's is $140. Gas is less than $20 right now. The water bill went up $8 because the girl I was seeing last month liked showers after every roll in the hay!

Well in Ontario we pay a certain amount per KW up to a certain amount of KW then pay more if you exceed. Then they tack on fees, for this, fees for that, fees here, fees there, fees, more fees and fees for the fees..

I have you all beat, our bill was $423 last month here in Orlando. Lucky its split 4 ways. One of my dumbass roommates likes to turn the A/C down to 69 at night after he & his girlfriend heat up his room, so we had a little discussion the other day & told him he cant turn it down below 74. Our house is pretty old & anything below 74 the a/c will stay on 80% of the time now.

About $.10 / ft per month is a good guage for this part of the country. That's for water, gas, and electric. Or course they will go up a little in the extreme months, July-Aug, Dec-Jan, but the average over the year is still 10 cents a foot. 2000 sqft, around $200/month.

    Cheers,

I don't have central air (which based on this thread, seems to be a blessing in disguise), but even with a bedroom window A/C unit going at night when I sleep, and several computers running, my electric bill in my apt rarely cracks 50 bucks. In the winter it's in the 30's.

My gas bill in teh winter can break 350 though. In the summer it's near non-existent, obviously.

It's probably my fault for telling them you thought they were stupid for getting killed by dumbasses pluging generators to their dryer outlets.:)

If you are not on a variable rate for time of day usage I would check into it.

Using your math I'm doing around $.125 per sq ft overall. Just Electric / water no gas, so if I think like this you have put me into a better mood. THANK YOU :D

    Hi Joe,
$340 seems high for the A/C at 79. I have the same pool pump as you. Mine is 1 year old + a clorine generator. If your pump is old, it may pull more juice. We have a 12 SEER a/c that is 3 years old. My house is about 2000 ft. w/vaulted ceilings. We pump the A/c to 71 at night and 77 during the day. Our bill was 240 last month, which is higher because my wife is a teacher and off in the summers, watching tv with the ac on lower.

Things to help lower the bill:
We had FPL - Florida Power and Light do an inspection of our whole house for $30. Well worth it. They find stuff to save $.

If the ac condenser is old, consider replacing with a 13 SEER or better. Change filters frequently.

We use all floeresent bulbs and they save a bundle and give off less heat.
Shut off ceiling fans when not in the room, they eat $8 each per month.

Put your clothes dryer on medium heat.

This stuff works for us and is no big deal.

About the same for me, exactly the same parameters too (sq.ft., pool...). In the winter it drops to about $100 per month but gas bill goes up to $100.
