PSW404 Output Blown

Hi
I'm a novice in this field so any "enlightenment" would be much appreciated.
My 404 is just short of 3 years old and on Sunday it started emitting a very loud buzzing sound even after I removed the RCA cable. Took it in to the agent here in South Africa and they came back to me today explaining that the output had blown and wanting to charge me about $140 to repair.
All my other kit was plugged in and is all still working - what could have caused this to happen?
