Compendium Second Edition Karma

This karma is for an abolutely free (shipping included) copy of The SDA Compendium Second Edition.

Any forum member who currently owns at least one pair of SDA's is eligible to place their names in the hat. Interested participants have until 6 pm (your local time zone) Saturday, July 8, 2006 to opt in. The winner will be announced at or shortly after 6 pm (CDT) on Sunday, July 9, 2006.

If your SDA(s) are not listed in your signature, I ask that you list an SDA pair that you currently own. All current SDA owners are eligible even if their SDA's are stored away in the attic or basement and you never have any intention of listening to them again.:)

****If the karma winner is someone who has already placed an order for the Compendium 2E, please send a PM stating if you wish to cancel your order.****

Thanks and good luck.

Edit****I had stated in another thread that I planned to donate two copies of the Compendium 2E as a raffle prize for this year's Polkfest. However, in retrospect, I realized that, by the time Polkfest comes around, everyone here who wants a Compendium will already have one. Therefore, I am going to offer two copies in this karma. There will be two winners announced on Sunday.****

She's still here. When I went to check on her this morning, she was furiously trying to climb out of the glass. After about an hour she gave up, spun a few webs and relaxed (upside down of course, gotta keep the warning symbol displayed.).

Obviously her feet won't stick to the glass, but her webbing will. It would be a simple matter for her to shoot a few strands higher and higher and pull herself out of the glass. Dumb spider.

...and relaxed (upside down of course, gotta keep the warning symbol displayed.)

How does she right herself from the oh-poor-me-I'm-dead/warning position? Looks like her legs only articulate 180 degrees.

Nope. Her legs have just as much articulation within their sockets as ours. A lot of insects cannot turn themselves over if they are placed on their backs due to inflexible spines and the inability to shift their weight and center of gravity.

Imagine lying flat on your back on the floor, then extending one leg and one arm straight upward, then bringing the extended arm and leg down in a 90 degree arc across your body so that your hands and feet touch the floor. To right herself, the black widow keeps the four legs on one side drawn close to her body while extending the four legs on the other side and bringing them across her body to touch the surface she is laying on. After the extended legs touch down, the drawn-in legs are extended which pushes her fully upright. The whole process takes less than a second.
