I'm with you venom. I didn't hate it, but I certainly didn't like it. I thought the casting stunk. Routh seemed too young and boyish to be a grown-up Superman. This was supposed to follow the the second Donner movie in terms of timeline, and Superman looked ten years younger, and acted it too. Kate Bosworth as Lois acted way too bitchy.... I mean, Lois was always bitchy, but... just different. And everyone complained that Spacey played Luthor too much like Gene Hackman's Luthor, but I didn't think it was enough. Hackman added some comedy to the character, it was genius, and Spacey had none of that.

The plot itself seemed a little too out there. I understand it's a comic book movie, but there has to be at least a THREAD of realism to it, and this just seemed slapped together to get the biggest effects.

I didn't like the visual style either. Superman looked like claymation. I like stylized movies - Sin City was awesome, for example - but I found it distracting in this sense.

Maybe my opinion is just clouded by loving the originals too much, but I really just dind't enjoy this as much as I had hoped to. And I loved the X-Men series, too, so I can't blame the director.

    I'd give it a C+, B- at best
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

    Wow Bob,
I think this is the second time we agree on something, the world must be coming to an end. lol

I agree with your points. Spacey is a very capable actor that could have done more with the character. Come on, next to Vader, Luther is one of the best villians of all time. I would love that part.

Routh did a good job, but is too young and bubblegum looking to play the part. He looks like he should be singing backup vocals for New Kids on The block.

Lois sucked. However, the kid did a great job.

But what really gets to me is: Spoiler Alert

Please tell me why Superman has a hard time stopping a commercial airliner from hitting the ground, while he can later lift an entire continent, full of Cryptonite out of Earths orbit, while injured no less.

If this is Superman Returns, that implies that he was on Earth and everybody knows who he is and what he can do. Thus, firing a gatling gun at him 5 ft. away does very little. Please explain to bank robber #2 that if Gatling gun has no effect, that a 9mm aint goin to do ****.

Perhaps I am too critical, but give me a break.

Never got into this movie myself, either. Superman was just okay, didn't have any of that swagger or charisma of Reeves. Would Superman really have to stock Lois Lane? Really????

Anyway, I thought it was just an action movie that didn't really live up to the storyline/history of Superman and the special effects were cool, but didn't seem realistic or keeping with the plot.

    Spoiler alert response:

I AGREE! How can he lift over a billion pounds of Krypto-laced crystal to space and seem to stuggle with some much easier obstacles. I would give it like a 6 out of 10, if that.

Think of it like a car. If you are going slow down a hill it is very easy to step on the brake & stop. However, if you are going 80mph down hill how easy will it be to stop before you go off the side of the cliff?

Supes had to stop a fast moving plane that was no doubt picking up speed all the way down.

You saw where he had a hold on the wing & the wing broke off didn't you? That gives you an idea of the kind of pressure he was putting on it. It wouldn't be of much use if the plane broke into a million pieces while he was trying to stop it.

Sorry C, still no. The plane traveling at any speed is still not anywhere near the force of lifting a continent. It is understood that the plane had people on it, and the rock was just a rock. The plane scene was a joke. It would have blown up many times before that anyway. The shuttle boosters would have ignited the fuel in the wings from the heat alone in the first few seconds. The plane would have been torn apart at its roof even before the plane blew up.

The plane could also not survive at that atmosphere. Lois was slammed into the hull a few times. Her neck would have been broken in many places, yet here makeup was fine on landing. The plane would also have exploded after its wings were torn off from the heat of reentry. Reentry would have destroyed the plane also. A space shuttle has to reenter the atmosphere at a certain angle or else it burns up. The angle creates a sonic boom off the nose that keeps the heat away from the hull.

Granted this is just a movie, and if we believe in the concept of Superman, then we have to believe in Unicorns etc… I think that my point is that this Superman was intended for a younger audience than the 70’s versions. It should have had a warning on the cover that said – If you are over 10, it will suck.

ROFLMAO!!!:D Well we all know that almost nothing put out in TV & movies is aimed at adults! So I just watch movies to be entertained.

I don't care about ancient history of what went on before with other actors portraying the role. If I did that I would be saying that NO ONE including Chris Reeves was as good as George Reeves. :D

As long as the movie has a storyline & isn't just about loud explosions & special effects I'll probably be happy.

And spinning the Earth backwards to reverse time in Supes 1 was realistic? Most of us loved that movie though. It's Superman!

    I loved the new one.

There are many tv shows and movies made for adults. There are so many great movies out there that it is easy to pick out the garbage. People like different things, granted. Complete BS is a cop out. Unless your audience agrees to it. A 6 year old would love those action scenes. I am not saying that we need a structural engineer to verify whether an action scene can take place. But you have to laugh when the "good guy" never runs out of ammo.

I expected more from a movie that had 20 years to find itself and a 9 figure budget. Compare X Men 2 and Daredevil.

LOL, No where did I say that the original Superman movies were realistic. I loved them too when they came out, I was 3. I still love them. Unrealistic, but much more entertaining, character development, comedy, etc...

I loved it... sorry. I thought the new kid was perfect. Not a recognizable face and seemed to perfectly capture the way I see Superman. I agree with a lot of what you have said Venom... but "dark streak?"

The only thing remotely resembling a "dark streak" that I have seen in Superman may have been in Frank Miller's Dark Night Returns graphic novels. And even that played off his supposed squeaky-clean image.

I love the originals too guys (and gals), but go back and watch 'em. Just because Marlon Brando makes an appearance, doesn't make them "adult".

They're pretty cartoony and definitely aimed at children more than adults.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Different strokes for different folks. Thats cool Zombie. The dark streak I was referring to was not an evil or malicious character, more of an internal struggle that I did not see at all in the new one. They did show his affections for Lois and others... but his persona was too 1 dimensional. This ties in with what I had meant with the originals being more adult. The action in juvenile, cartoony as you will, but a lot of the dialogue is beyond most children, especially S2. I am not saying that the actor did a bad job, just that the writing in Hollywood has to be aimed at catching the biggest audience as possible as a business plan. Look what they did to King Kong, 1-dimensional.
Movies are business. Mediocre plot along with action = money. Add sex to that and an R rating for more $. And it is our money buying these, expect more. They are capable. I Give S Returns a C.

    Excellent point... I stand corrected:)

As far as King Kong is concerned, I thought it was amazing how Peter Jackson was able to utterly humanize a CG creation. Did the exact same thing with Gollum, but hit it out of the park with Kong.

all in another thread I think:D

Just watched the DVD. I give a solid B.

Best part was that there was a ton of LFE through out the whole movie. I repeated some of these scenes over and over and cranked up my Sub just to feel my house rattle under my bones. I never get enough of it.

    BRAVO

I liked it. Spacey, as always, is perfect. He brings a more dark character to Lex Luthor; not too silly like the Hackman portrayal. The new Superman did a wonderful job. Special effects were the best yet, flying looked real. We really enjoyed this.
