I went to the local performing arts center last night (Saratoga actually, SPAC) to see Nine Inch Nails. I've been a casual fan since Downward Spiral came out when I was younger but never thought I would end up going to see them.

Well the opportunity came to get some Lawn tickets for 15 bucks so I jumped. And boy am I glad I did. This was one of the best shows I've ever been too. Trent Reznor has so much energy on the stage its incredible. He didnt really interact with the crowd like I'm used to at club shows, but I guess thats to be expected when there are thousands of people instead of hundreds.

The stage was set up with this crazy light reflecting cage type thing that a projector was shot onto that did some really cool effects in front of the band. At one point they just put one section of it down and had it as a type of cylinder with blood dripping from the top and it slowly filled up during the song. The little things like that made it so much better than it already was.....and the crowd was effing nuts when everything went black for about 5 minutes only to have a blue spotlight shine back on to Reznor sitting at a piano starting up "Hurt". I had never seen so many lighters go up in the air. Amazing song, but Im more partial to the industrial stuff like Terrible Lie, Head Like a Hole and Into the Void (all of which were played).

All in all, great show. Still not on the same level as Tool was when I saw them, but it beat out just about everything else including A Perfect Circle and Nonpoint. Anyone else seen a NIN show?

I saw them during the Downward Spiral tour twice. Just like you say -- high energy. I remember at least five keyboards shattered into thousands of pieces. The Jim Rose Circus opened for him, too.... those cats are beyond crazy.

You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Haha, yeah, Reznor just kept throwing mic stands like crazy.

Roadie probably came out like 5 times in the first three songs to fix/replace the stand that Reznor just kept throwing around. Almost felt bad for the guy but it was surely entertaining.

I was surprised how short Reznor actually was..

He was like some sort of rabid lemur on stage.:D Give the man his props though, he kept 'em entertained.

You said you saw the Downward Spiral tour right? So he was his the little skinny guy wearing crazy leather outfits and the sort?

He isn't at all like that now. I mean I couldnt see **** from where I was, but the venue had camera guys with projectors all over. When they got close up on him, he looks a ton different. He is effing JACKED now. Guy must work out alot. He also seemed to just downgrade to normal clothing....as well as aged, but thats to be expected after over 15 years of playing.

    ... and hard livin':D

yeah, I saw a pic of 'em -- he's definitely been eating his Wheaties.

As for the industrial attire, I guess you might as well be sporting bell-bottoms and platforms nowadays.

Gotta keep up with the kiddies

I saw him with APC opening. Great show! I was also a casual fan at the time, but it made me like Trent a lot more. High energy the whole time, very entertaining. Crowd was really involved. Made up for APC only playing for about 15 minutes.

APC was good live, don't get me wrong. They just didnt have the energy of Trent or quite the show that Tool put on.

I don't know if anything could beat the atmostphere of the Tool concert I attended.

Our openers for Nin weren't quite as well known as Manson or APC. We got Bauhaus (kind of like a mix between Bowie and Orgy with out the weird Orgy lyrics) and some awful "special guest" called Peaches. This industrial "band" (she referred to herself as Peaches, didnt even acknowledge the band) was terrible. All she did was write songs about having sex and getting "**** galore". It sounded like a 15 year old rapper wrote the lyrics and had an ugly goth sing them for her.

    You wanna talk "energy"....

I saw the Cramps play a gig recently, and 250 years between the **** notwithstanding -- they destroyed.

and if you haven't seen Electric Six, hop on a bus now and head towards their next gig....

the lead singer does sit-ups during guitar solos:D

... and Bauhaus has been around forever

All those bands owe some part of their royalties to them or the Cure.

I don't deny Trent's talent pool, but he's never done much for me personally. I will say that it's too bad the MJK and Reznor collaboration got squashed, despite APC being defunct now for well over a year.

Love NIN's old stuff and have heard great things about their shows, but the newest CD bites a big one IMO. Its too cookie cutter and radio friendly from what I've heard.

Then again, I haven't like much of anything that has come out in the past 5 years.

I have yet to see a NIN show but I hear it's amazing. I missed tool last time around but they'll be back in Aug here so I'm all over it. Nonpoint... seen them twice and WOW! The last time, they were right before SevenDust (headliner) and they blew them away! Nonpoint is nothing short of amazing. That guy has a set of pipes on him that don't quit. I have all four albums and LOVE them. Korn used to put on a great show back in the day. I'm gonna see them again here soon so we'll see how they do now. Slipknot is still my favorite show to date.

Ive seen Nonpoint twice now as well and both have been very entertaining (and both with Sevendust).

Korn will be here in september with the family values tour with Deftones and Stone Sour. Damn show is only going to be 10 bucks here and I really want to see the Deftones but I will already be back at school. Sucks.

I saw them (him and his touring band) in 95 (further down the spiral), last october (live with teeth '05 - I posted a review here: link), and I've got tickets to the show on 7-1-06 in Tinley Park, IL. The last show was, bar none, the best concert I've ever been to. Don't get me wrong - the show in '95 was fantastic (lots of chicks taking their tops off and making out with...each other  ) but his intensity seems to be bigger and badder now than it was in '95. I'm REALLY looking forward to July 1st!

I saw NIN back in 95' when I lived in NY. We had scalped some floor admission tickets last minute on my birthday. NIN was my favorite band back then and the show was awesome. I was 50 ft. from Trent and the whole floor was one big mosh pit. I have since not bought another NIN album since DS. I had heard good things about The Fragile but never got it. Same with the last album.

Tool has filled the gap since then.

Just saw them last night in Tinley Park. Great concert! Compared to the one in October I'd say that the set list and crowd (completely sold out) was better on 10-7. The atmosphere, acoustics, and seats were better last night. I sit in the ADA accessible seating area and Tinley had us closer (middle of the amphitheater) than Rosemont (back of the arena).

Don't get me wrong - they were both great shows. Bauhaus played a bit longer so I felt we got screwed out of 20 -30 minutes (more) of Trent. He played a lot of his older material this time around too. Last time seemed, to me, a perfect blend of past and present. Intensity was the same (thank gawd).

I'm a long time NIN fan. Some of the last stuff he put out is a bit spotty. I remember when Pretty Hate Machine came out, it was in constant rotation in my cdp. If I ever get the opportunity to see them w/o having to travel to another city, I'd go. I've seen bootleg footage and he puts on an entertaining high energy show.

I feel I've moved away from the hard core aggression he plays, but I have to admit, much like classic Heavy Metal bands, there is an allure that keeps me listening. Right now I'm banging away to Ac/Dc. Gets your blood flowing!!

I'll probably put in Pretty Hate Machine next. It's one of those days.
