A'goin' Mattress shopping.... HELP!!

So after weeks of being entirely overwhelmed everytime we enter a mattress store, the wife and I are putting the clamp down tonight and making a purchase. We've had enough of our current set-up, and we need something now. So knowing possibly less than when we first started looking, I need advice, inuput, info, etc., as I am at a complete loss.:o

First off, we know that we don't want something too firm, but nothing too incredibly soft. No need for memory foam or anything the astronauts sleep on. Really it's the prices that have me baffled. I really haven't been able to tell a difference between some $450 mattressess and $2500 mattresses. Plus, as we have a platform bed, we won't be needing a box spring.

The key here is.... best bang for the buck (fire at will, gentlemen:D ). If it's cheap and comfy, then we're talking.

Thanks in advance for your input

Jason
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I'm in the same boat. Girlfriend is bugging me to get a more comfortable mattress which means I will likely be buying a new mattress before I buy any considerable audio gear to keep balance of the world in order.

Mattress Giant (I think) was having a 50% off sale. They had a couple $2000 mattresses for half price. May start there, if you have an MG by you.

Just make sure whatever you buy is comfortable and has a good warranty, with emphasis on the good warranty.

Most will come with a long warranty period, but you need to make sure that warranty is comprehensive. If you spills something on the matress, does that void the warranty? if you're looking at a king size, does the warranty cover any sagging in the middle that will inevitably happen. A warranty is worth every extra penny if you get a bumper to bumper, no questions asked type deal - unfortunately those come with higher price tags.

Did I mention that the warranty is important?

Also, if a place isn't going to let you return the mattress after trying it for a couple of weeks - don't do business with them. it's going to feel different after sleeping on it a few nights than it does in the store, so make sure you have the option or returning it.

Oh, andd you might want to make sure whatever mattress you buy has a really good warranty too...

Sleep Comfort comes with a 20 year warranty. They'll come in and set it up and take out your old one. Best. Bed. Ever.

    No, I don't own stock. ;)

I went throught the same thing last year. Whatever you choose, make it clear with the salesman that you want the option of exchanging it for another one. We chose one we thought we'd like, but after a few nights it was apparent we wouldn't want to keep it. We used the exchange policy and got a different one that we are happier with.

If you have back problems your needs for a mattress will be different. So ask questions concerning that.

Lie on several different mattresses at their showrooms for a few minutes, (don't be shy) lie in the position you normally sleep in. Lie on one after the other as if you are auditioning speakers in an A-B-C-D comparison. You'll quickly weed out the ones that are less comfortable and then it will come down 2 or 3 choices. At that point it may become an issue of price, because invariably, the priciest one sometimes ends up being the most comfortable.

The first one we chose cost $1100 but we then exchanged for the $1500 model. We ended up with the SERTA "Perfect Sleeper" model.

The golden rule is to make absolutely clear that you are allowed to exchange it if you don't like it....I think they give you a few weeks to a month to exchange it.

    Good luck and good sleeping.

My dad bought a SelectComfort (which I THINK is what Demi was referring to?), and hasn't looked back since. They're a LITTLE more expensive than a traditional, but they come with a warranty, and they come and set it up for you at your house. And basically it can be a soft mattress, a firm mattress, BOTH if you and your wife don't have th esame "taste"... it's all things to all people :)

I'd get one if I could afford it....
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Avoid Serta "Perfect Sleeper" at all costs. We bought a new mattress just over a year ago and, while it was nice when it was new, I'm about ready to toss it in the garbage.

One mattress I had, and really liked, was a Simmons Beauty Rest. No fancy pillotop or anything - just a comfortable mattress. All I did was sit down on the thing in the store. It felt really comfortable so I bought it. Lasted a long time too. Don't ask me why I didn't get another beauty rest. The first time it was my decision to buy it - the Serta was a joint decision (WAF).

You can't tell anything by laying on a mattress in the store unless you plan on taking a nap there.

I've heard good things about the Select Comfort mattress but that may be more than you want to spend.

    Good luck.

Make sure the place you buy it from has a return / exchange policy so that you can get something else if you really don't like it.

I never thought going up in price made big difference. I would buy 400-600 for both matt & boxspring. Then after feeling the springs in my ribs, my now wife, gf at the time said "since we are moving in together it's time" We looked around...and around...and around... We fond one that was amazing for us, it's by obusform as I have ongoing back issues. Ordered that puppy matt & boxspring, 3500$ later....The best nights sleep I have ever had. Again, think of it like audio, if you like the way it feels then buy it. As Joe said buy from a place that has a trial period, ours is 90 nights.

My wife & I bought a Select Comfort king size matress last year and absolutely love it. It's the most comfortable matress I've ever slept on, and we can change each side independently so we're both happy! Their not cheap, but worth the time to check out atleast. Here is their website. We have the 7000 series.

Hmmm....interesting...I can't say that's been our experience. So far, our Perfect Sleeper is, well, perfect.

Laying on the mattresses in the showroom immediately eliminated many from the final choices, so in my opinion there is some value in lying on the showroom models.

mattresses are pricey for the good ones.. but they are worth it..

i'm looking to buy a new one this winter probably myself.. i can't seem to get out of my mind how comfy those pillow top ones are. I've demoed them at a few stores in the past few months. Man, i could really get used to a nice thick pillow top mattress.

Here is an idea.. where i live there about three places in town that build their own mattresses.. and at discount prices. Don't dismiss them at all though.. they supply most of the bed for the higher end hotels here in town. so they're not gut rot mattresses at all . Plus buying from them at the warehouse prices they offer... could save you some bucks. Worth checking out.

*i'm listening to FM radio right now. guess what? There is a mattress outlet commercial spot on the radio. Waaaaaaaaaaa!

Vera Wang mattress????? That's what they're pushing on the radio. Hmmmmm?

    I'm with you DB...

the problem is they're allcomfortable when I "demo" 'em -- which doesn't speak highly of our current set-up

Come to think of it, just about anything is going to offer a vast improvement.
Anyway, I'd rather just sleep on the floor if it meant I could swing a couple of audio upgrades:D just kidding....

    no I'm not
    anyway,

    Select Comfort
    Perfect Sleeper
    Simmons Beautyrest

still trying to keep it affordable though....

Speaking of pillow tops, ours is on both sides, so when we flip it it's the same. Now keep in mind that some of yuor older sheets might not fit the single or double pillow tops..we had to go out and buy new fitted sheets.

get whatever feels best with a long warranty. if one costs more than another and you like it best, but it's like $500 more, think about $500 stretched out over the life of the mattress (10 or so years) and it pays to pay extra. i went cheap and wish i had not.

This is exactly what I did when I bought my bed last year. When I found a mattress that I fell asleep on in the middle of the store after being on the bed for 10 minutes or so, I knew I was gonna buy it. I think I was out for about 20-30 minutes actually. I have to check when I get home as to what exactly I bought and will let you know.

Many of the pillowtops nowadays are just on one side eliminating the need to flip/turn/rotate for an even wear. Mine's just on top and I don't ever have to spin it at all.

One thing to keep in mind is that you HAVE to ask specifically if the mattres warranty if voided if you don't use their box spring. I've heard stories from people that they didn't use the box and the manufacturer basically incinuated that they didn't have proper support for their mattress and they had no claim. BIG mistake that can cost in the thousands. Whatever you do, don't tell them you're putting it on a platform......take the box springs home and store them somewhere, because should a claim ever need to arise, you better have those things around.

Even when we didn't have pillow top we still flipped it. Your torso weighs more than your legs and your spouse/GF/BF/husband/lover/mistress might weigh more or less than you. By flipping and rotating , it moves the usual used spots somehere else.

Thanks for the head's up on the box spring/warranty connection... We were probalby going to try to save some money by not purchasing the box spring. Now, I'm not too sure...
