Germany wins over Costa Rica, 4-2. A good play, Costa Rica is surprisingly good, considering the odd is 350 to 1. Second Germany goal was amazing, it was kicked from over 40 yards. Next, Poland and Ecuador in 1 hour.

Great day so far, anyone else watching this with me? In case anyone wondering, US first game is Monday. Odd is 85 to 1 for US. I won't hold my breath, but it would be a good play regardless, I am sure.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I spent some time in the rain forest of Ecuador when I was studying in Quito....

one of the most vivid memories I have is of children playing soccer with a homemade "ball" (poss. a gourd) and fishing nets used for goals....

we were close to 6 hours by canoe from anything remotely resembling civilization, and here were these kids playing soccer

I'm as apple pie as they come, but I can't help but feel we're out of the loop on this one....
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. The World Cup is one of the most watched events in Latin America. It's a big FIESTA. I'm in Mexico right now and everybody is talking about it and people watch as many games as they can.
I was dissapointed by Germany....we'll see how they go. The US? I bet they'll go to the next round.

Most watched in Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. A true world event anywhere you go right now, outside North America of course. Where is the Canadian team, by the way?

Soccer is a lot of fun to play, and just god-awful to watch. I love how everyone gets on the US's case about not joining the world and liking soccer. It's just the way it is. No one makes fun of Europe for not likign American football or baseball. Just let it go. America will NEVER be as into World Cup Soccer as the rest of the world, and it's just not a big deal that we aren't.

Man, I wish baseball or american football hooliganism was acceptable. I would be all over that. But no, Americans just sit, clap, and get drunk. I am also okay with that.

My good friend is living in Europe right now and I know he is very excited to be over there for the WC.

I'm with y'all. I have my dual-tuner DVR set-up and ready to record. I'm gonna have to re-program it though since Comcast is finally adding ESPN2HD! :D

I would be a bit surprised if we didn't get out of group play. The key is to come out in first to avoid playing Brazil in the first round of the Finals. A draw with the Czech's and wins over Italy and Ghana would be tough to beat if the Czech's can be beaten or drawn by the others.

I think Germany's homefield advantage is gonna be tough as well. Then England, if they can get all their top guys mostly healthy on the field at the same time...wow!

I think they should have stuck the States in an easier division... It's one of the toughest out there, if not the toughest. Want to inspire the American public? Let them win a couple of games...

I like soccer, but I'll take a Boston Red Sox game over it any day of the week. Waiting 2 hours for the average 2 - 1 victory leaves a lot of boring kicking around, IMO.

That said, today's game against Costa Rica was interesting. I had to leave for work with 8 minutes less, so I didn't see Germany's last goal but still a good match.

Maybe they're trying to trick USA viewers into watching by making them think their team is good.

It's going to take a lot more than that for World Cup coverage to eek past 3 AM programming on the Home Shopping Network in the Neilsen ratings battle.

With regard to the low scoring, check out this commentary from ESPN.com:

"Scoring like an Ace Of Base member in the early '90s. Sweden averaged three goals per game during World Cup qualifying. And while the irrational soccer haters who think the sport is too low-scoring may not think three goals per game is all that impressive, irrational soccer haters have never been accused of being especially bright. So look at it this way: the Super Bowl champion Steelers averaged only about three touchdowns per game last year, it's just that each touchdown was awarded seven points (yes, I realize it's officially only six). So if it helps, let's say Sweden averaged 21 points during World Cup qualifying. Wow! Amazing! Soccer is so high-scoring!"

I'll be watching as much of it as I can. I've been at work all day so far and have a poker game tonight, but for the rest of the weekend, I'll be drinking and watching. I played soccer for 14 years earlier.

Seriously! I wish ESPN would pull those Poker tournaments they keep showing and let us see something that doesn't come around too often. I'm diggin the World Cup, atleast what I have time to watch. Always liked Soccer!

England looked bad today, but got lucky on that Beckham goal, if you want to call it that. Great kick though. He put it right there.

Germany is a monster! Amazing goals!

    Go USA!
    No excuses!

    It's official.....

    I'm hooked:D

I've watched every scoreless minute I could fit into my schedule. Hell, I was sneaking away during a family get together to watch Serbia-Montenegreo play on a 19'' TV (with one of those old school cable boxes with all the channels manually running left to right).
    What is happening?!?

I think soccer is somewhat like chess. Fun to play, but if your just a casual fan, there is no way you can understand the intricacies of the game which makes watching it intolerably painful. Unfortunately most of the US exposure is limited to elementary school until they could start playing football so they don't get it. (similarly, I don't "get" baseball)

I think that goals should count like 23 points when reporting results to the US just to eff with Americans. (Germany 92- Costa Rica 46)

US might not deserve the #5 rank, but they are easily in the top 10. You would be hard pressed to name 5-8 teams decisively better. All teams, excluding Brazil, have some glaring weaknesses. Oh, and Englands coach is a moron.

Mexico tops Iran which I found pleasing.

I'm a HUGE baseball fan and absolutely despise high-scoring affairs. I believe these home-run derbys that pass for games nowadays are reprehensible. The American League is nearly unwatchable with their 12-8 contests and little to no strategy at the plate and on the basepaths. The "chess-match" of a 1-0 pitching duel is far more tense and exciting than any video-game instant fix offered by MLB.
By trying to rein in the casual fan, baseball alienated many of it's true fans by completely transforming the game. Any of you remember when 30 homeruns would win you a HR title? Darrly Strawberry anyone?

I have found a lot of the same reasons I enjoyed pre-strike baseball to be apparent in the soccer games I have watched of late. A slow, steady build-up. The aforementioned nuance-oriented strategy. The different style of play between the teams. etc etc etc

The game is not necessarily in the scoring.... and I'm glad I'm giving this sport a chance.
    It's been entertaining

It was great to see all the Mexican players swarming Sanchez after the game.
-- all of them with tears in their eyes... obviously playing hard to honor their teammates recently deceased father.

And the Iranian players offering him flowers before the game...:)

My best friend's from Sydney. They definitely prefer their Aussie Rules Football and Rugby over soccer (and definitely all three over the NFL-- he claims no "true" sport should use pads).

He's says soccer's picking up in popularity though...

and thanks for the soccernet.com referral; i'll go check it out
