I've had Dish Network for years... was somewhat happy with it... costs me $50.43 a month for something like 150 channels. A few compliants though.... the receiver is old.. only offers S-video output.. and optical audio.

I told them i was going with Direct TV..and the best they could do was offer me a lower package for $24.95 a mo. but that's only the top 50 channels :( i thought they would try harder to keep me as a customer.. but they didn't push very hard. Hoping they would give me a cut rate deal on my current package of channels. Oh well.

I really wanted with Dish to get an HDTV receiver with component outputs.. but they said I don't qualify as a current customer for any deals.. BUT, that they could upgrade me for the small price of $199 and I could buy a HDTV PVR.  That plus my monthly Dish service would increase in price too along with the $199 i'd have to shell out. That's eff'd up!

I am heading towards digital cable, since I already get my high speed internet from the local cable company (Comcast). I hope I can get a good deal on an HDTV PVR thru them for less than what I was paying for at Dish. We'll see.

Thats BS I upgraded 2 of my Dish Network receiver to HD for $24 dollars and my bill only went up $5 a month to add the HD programing , But they where running an upgrade deal at the time. Try getting in touch with some of there local installers and the can tell you when they will have another upgrade offer. If I'm not mistaken Dish ran a prgram a cople of months ago that you could upgrade to the new HD reicever and the newest dish for around $45

Cable is more expensive but some companies will work with you. I don't know about Comcast, but with Time Warner you call up and say you want to cancel because you are switching to satellite. All of the sudden they are willing to drop your monthly price by 25-30% for 6 to 12 months.

After that 6 to 12 months is up, rinse and repeat.

If I heard correctly, the reason why they didn't care is because Direct is supposedly buying out Dish.

    I heard the same.

Al, call them back and use the cable route. They have a different outlook when the word cable is mentioned. I will soon be trying for a new mpeg4 DVR box when they make them available, I need to check the status.

I called them to upgrade to HD and they told me it would cost $78.00 one time and $20.00 more per month.
By the time I was done getting HD in two rooms and my old receiver in a third my bill will almost double to like $70.00 per month.
I think I am going to go the OTA route for HD and local.

I hate the cable company big time. All of them. They are an evil empire that is stifling OTA options.

That BS, 1 month ago I called them up and told them I was going to cable, they jumped through hoops and updated me to the new slim box 211, and gave me a bronze package with all their HD programming including HD locals for 62.95 that includes the price for HBO(for Sopranos). Give them a call and try to get different sales rep I tried several times and got the deal I wanted. Sometime the reps are new and just read off their screens but if you gat a seasoned rep they will try their darnest to keep you.

i did call back.. no deal from Dish. there again.. this time was a female.. and handed my call off to a "service professional" ?? and was "sad to see me go", but that they could only offer me the same deal as before. I didn't tell them I called to cancel earlier.. but i'm sure they knew if they pulled up my account.

This time I told them i was thinking cable was a better deal than Direct... i think they just don't care anymore if they lose a few long time customers.. it's the new customers where they make their real money by offering nice incentives.

If i go to cable.. i'm sure they will have "incentives" too. WHich i plan on taking full advantage of. ha ha ha.

This just gets me pissed off. I have digital cable, modem, HD, and DVR. After all is added up, my bill is $130/month. Now that's for HBO, Showtime, 12 HD channels, 7 or 8 Encore channels, Family pak, cable modem, and one 80gb DVR/HD receiver and one regular digital receiver. When Dish came through my neighborhood, just last week, they couldn't save me but $5/ month, but then I'd have to pay more to keep the cable internet connection.

I hate Comcast. Unfortunately, they are my only choice for TV services. I can't use Dish or DirecTV since my apt. management won't allow satellite dishes on the exterior of the apt. building, plus I don't have a south facing view. Our cable service stopped working in November and they didn't repair it until February! Every time I called they gave me the run-around. When they finally did get it repaired, they offered us the Digital Gold package for $39.99 for six months. Comcast blows!

seems paying for televsion is really beginning to get expensive and pretty much suck. I am in the boat with the rest of you, sitting around 115.00 month for my Direct service.

TWC Digital package, HD tier programming (ESPN, inHD1/2, HDNet Movies, DiscoveryHD, locals), one set-top box, cable modem --> ~$97/month including all taxes.

This is a non-DVR box and no premium channels at all.

KC area. We have a competitor, Everest, in our neighborhood so its easy to pit them against each other. My friend who lives about 10 miles east of me pays about $40 more per month for the same service because Everest is not in his neighborhood.

We had that price for 2 years, then they tried to change it, and my wife straightened things out. :D

The same thing happened to me a few months back while I was trying to get a "free" upgrade to a DVR from a regular receiver. They said that since I'm an existing customer, they couldn't upgrade me to a DVR for free, but for $**** they could do it. I don't think they even care to keep their current customers....

Noel, you're getting quite a good deal.. if i do go with Comcast digital cable.. with HD, DVR, ON Demand, high speed internet and no premium channels . my bill will approx $137 a month. and they take off $10 the bundle for having high speed internet.. and bump my download speed up to 8MB instead of 6MB = $127 a month.

there better not be any damn freakin installation fees. or i'll have a caniption fit right there in the office of Comcast.;)

I have had a similar experience but with Directv..it seems they wine and dine you until you are their customer, then is over. You can't get a good deal on equipment. Same with cell phones. I signed a 2 year contract with Verizon, phone was almost dead and they wouldn't give me a new one with a new contract. They would give me only $100 for one phone. Who cares I was on the family plan? The big thing now is leased satellite equipment. Be careful buying used equipment because it is probably on lease and cannot be activated.

It's nice having a friend that works for Comcast. No fees other than some beer for the install and got me the "inside" marketing material so I could figure out the best deal available. Then when my DVR started **** up, he just brings a different one to our soccer games!

I looked at Qwest DSL and DirecTV package, but decided the higher speed was worth a little more on the cable and I kinda figured that once I got all the HD programming, etc. the price would be close. Looks lik eI was right, plus I'm sure they would have pressured me to get a land line. :(

I wonder if TWC has any newer HD boxes out and if it would make a difference compared to my current one...

Is DVR service something that can be "deactivated"? I was thinking about signing up for DVR service just to get a newer set top box. If you cancel the DVR service I wonder if they switch out your box again.

JK! I have no idea.. they will probably still charge you the monthly fee for having a DVR.. whether you use it or not.. i think if you go with a DVR it's like $10 a month..

I pay $120 for my FIOS package. I could get cable/satellite for cheaper but I like the quality and features of FIOS much better.

    - 15Mbit/2Mbit internet
    - one HD DVR
    - one HD rec.
    - two SD rec.

No premium channels included. Can't get OLN or NHL Centre Ice, that's my only complain so far.
