I just wanted to let everyone know about this new player. I did a search on Oppo Digital here and looks like this company knows how to make a giant-killer DVD player. So here goes....Oppo goes universal with its new DV-970HD.
It will do DVD-Audio/Video, SACD, CD, and even decode HDCD through its analog audio outputs. Not to mention HDMI output and all other video-related function. So check it out.

Wow, I wonder if that'll be as good as their other player that's received so many good reviews...

Danny,
I swear you just read my mind. In fact, I was about to start a thread asking for suggestions on a Universal/SACD player. The wife wants one bad, and who am I turn down her fleeting moments of upgradeitis?:D Thanks for the head's up....I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore -
looks like it only does upconversion for CCS encrypted discs via HDMI though - wonder if there's an HDMI to DVI converter?

Click on the link for owner's manual to DV-970HD.

Since HDMI is essentially DVI - You can get a cable with two different ends (HDMI on one and DVI on the other). I have done this beforeGod shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. - Romans 5:8 -
For those who are interested in this Oppo universal player, and counting myself as one, here's a thread at AVS Forum (already 5 pages as of this post) that may answer some of your concerns and questions.

Unique "Audio Only" mode with video processing turned off for perfect acoustic fidelity
Any idea what this actually means....I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. It means that it has the circuitry to turn off video signal path and processing, to minimize noise. It is the new trend in the newer (usually higher end) universal player.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Thanks for the info...
I figured as much, but just haven't seen it before as a feature on DVD players.I never had it like this where I grew up. So this is a region-free player as well? Wow!

I just hope Oppo will make a universal HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. That would kick ****.There are two ways to argue with women. Both of them are wrong.

I just ordered one of these purely out of curiosity to see how they perform. I'll be checking it out for movies, but its additional abilities appears to make this unit on hell of a bargain.
I also called Oppo's customer service a couple of times to ask some questions, and I was impressed with how quickly I got someone, so that was an added plus for me.Main theater: Paradigm Studio 100's v4 L/R, CC690 Center, ADP 590 x4 Surrounds. Did it release today? I will be getting one for sure. Just too tempting at this price point. Either this or the Denon will be moved into the main rig for SACD/DVDA duty.

I think they're back ordered until mid June

There're other universal players available for under $150.00, notably the Pioneer and the Toshiba. However, none of these has HDMI nor HDCD. -
I've had this player for a little more than a week now, and for the price this player is a bargain. As I noted earlier, I only use it for movies, so I cannot comment on DVD-A or SACD, but for movies the picture and sound quality are both very good.
When I want to give the Pioneer's a rest, I can watch movies on the Oppo without feeling like I'm making a significant sacrifice in quality.
In terms of price to performance ratio it's a real winner, and I would recommend it for anyone who is trying to put together a quality system on a limited budget. I don't think you can find a player with as complete a package as this one for $150.00.
I have noticed on the Oppo that when HDMI is set to 1080i, the black bars on the top and bottom of movies are just a tad higher than on the Pioneer, or when setting the HDMI on the Oppo to 480i. Picture at 1080i is a bit cleaner a little more detailed and slightly richer so it's not a really big deal, just something I found interesting.Main theater: Paradigm Studio 100's v4 L/R, CC690 Center, ADP 590 x4 Surrounds. Thanks for the comment, Nelson. So, since you own both PE 59/79, would you say the Oppo can be a real replacement for the PE, all else being equal? We are talking about $150 vs. $1000 units, so if price is assumed to be of equal, is the Oppo a real contender? My thought is to use the Oppo as a stop-gap measure to replace DV-37, before deciding on BR/HD-DVD and new display with HDMI. Gratze.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Polkatese, The Oppo actually did replace a Pioneer Elite DV-45A which I had in the main theater, and it was indeed a step up. I would certainly recommend the Oppo for the your line of thinking. For anyone waiting out the Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, wars but wanting a good quality HDMI upconverting player without breaking the bank in the interim, I would say to definitely put the Oppo on your short list.
Denon, and Panasonic make competive products, but they do cost a little more, and I've seen a number of people comment on the macroblocking problem on some displays. The Oppo 970 has no MB issues, at least I have not experienced any, and the picture quality is more than satisfactory on my Sony.
I count myself among those who will wait awhile to see how the HD format wars play out, and for HD hardware and software prices to stabilize. These players (Oppo included) allow me to do that and not feel like I'm missing anything.Main theater: Paradigm Studio 100's v4 L/R, CC690 Center, ADP 590 x4 Surrounds. Thanks for the feedback Nelson. Oppo is already on order, I am glad you have done your comparo since Pioneer Elite 45A is in the same production period as my 37, so it should very close in terms of PQ. When you ordered yours, was it backordered?I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I ordered mine almost immediately upon hearing of its release on Audioholics, so it was not backordered, and arrived with 2nd Fed-EX day air shipment. Oppo really is doing some amazing things, both from a customer service standpoint and a bang-for-the-buck perspective. I have the 1st-generation Oppo as my second player for PAL and non-region-1 material. I thought it was a bargain at $160.
Offering a universal player at an even lower price point is incredible... -

Universal doesn't mean region free, right? i.e. it is still only plays region 1 DVD's.

It can be "hacked" into a region-free player....see above AVS Forum link. And Fred, if you want one, you can pick one up at their Mountain View coporate office and save yourself shipping charges. -
