Who keeps their original boxes?

So I'm getting ready to make a big cleanup in my garage. I've got quite a few original boxes for some of my gear including my recent Polk csi and fxi speakers. Now I'm not one to sell my gear (I've still got all my stuff from the 80's), but it seems like it's wrong to do it, yet I know that they are totally useless to me and just taking up space that can be put to better use.

Sooo....how many of you keep your original boxes and if you don't plan on ever selling your stuff why do you keep them?
Amplifiers: 1-SAE Mark IV, 4-SAE 2400, 1-SAE 2500, 2-SAE 2600, 1-Buttkicker BKA 1000N w/2-tactile transducers. I keep them always. If I do sell the equipment it's a nice little bonus. I kept the boxes originally for moving purposes. Nothing worse than trying to move nice equipment w/o a proper box to fit it in. I know it takes up space but in the end I think it's worth it.

I have saved the boxes also. We plan to move in the next few years, so I want to be able to protect the equipment at that time. I even saved the receiver and surge surpressor boxes.

I always save empty boxes...break them down, and stuff them in a corner.

I normally save gear boxes, good for resale, if I ever sell anything.

Oh yeah. I even keep the power cord boxes. So far every piece of gear I've had in the past I've sold, so there's no reason to believe that I'm gonna keep the gear I currently have forever.

If I buy something on audiogon, one of the things I look for is whether the owner has the original box. It helps make the sell.

Depending on what it is, they get trashed. I pack better than a piece of foam anyways. If the box is empty, I also try to consolidate a bunch of other boxes internally....ala the SVS subwoofer box.

I agree with Early, as an original box is a big thing for me as well.

With the revolving door on my HT I always save the boxes. Buyers love to see that you have the original box. paperwork etc. when you go to resell your gear. It shows that you probably are particular and take care of it.

I keep everything: Boxes and foam inserts are up in the attic, papers (dated) are in a file.

I'm not selling or moving -- yet -- which is always going to happen. Even if I die, whoever gets the gear gets the proper way to get it out.

Ok, so I'll be saving all the original boxes of the gear I have....space consuming, but what the heck...you never know. Now back to garage cleaning.

I save them, and put the packing foam inside the box. If I buy used, I think it does send a message about how the equipment was treated. I bought a couple of 30 year old Marantz pieces recently with the foam packing and original boxes and paperwork. I thought Wow! This stuff was treated well by the owners.

Keeping the packaging can come in handy if you sell, have to move, or send something back for warranty work. When selling I think it makes a good impression to the buyer, they like boxes too. For repairs, Companies prefer that you send it back properly boxed for protection, Theirs And Yours.

With the exception of very large televisions, I keep all my original boxes and foam inserts stacked in the attic. Receipts and associated papers go in a file.

Mine are all broken down and folded in the attic duct taped in lawn & garden bags for later use, clean and even dust free. My wife thought I was crazy because I rarely sell, and never move, but it has just so happened that we have moved twice in the past 2 years and just bought a house so moving down the street in June. Vintage boxes are sometimes as cool as the gear.

In reality, some day you may want to sell stuff to upgrade. I've found that if you have the original boxes and all packaging material it is much easier to sell equipment at a higher price. Your goal should be to be able to package it up as it was new. It also makes life much easier if you sell because you can protect the equipment better for shipping purposes. I will NEVER throw away boxes again. I've really paid for it recently as I've been selling off my old unused equipment. I truthfully never thought I would ever sell any of it but as I move on I want different toys.
