Help with new to me 7b's (tweeter trouble)

I am baby sitting my friends audio gear for the summer and it needs some work. I have the go ahead to fix things up as it has sat unused due to horrible sound quality. This is my first foray into vintage audio gear. The setup consists of 7b's, a Pioneer SA-6700 and a technics turntable.
As far as I can tell the amp is fine. The speakers have tweeter trouble. Thanks to browsing this forum I have taken a few steps toward fixing them. I replaced the fuses (250V 1amp fast blow) and got them both working. Now one tweeter has a fuzzy rattle to it at middle to high volume but sounds bright and clear otherwise and the other tweeter is dull and muted but makes sound.
I swapped the tweeters between the speakers and the behaviors travelled with the tweeters so I am assuming the tweeters are bad. One thing to note is that the magnet and base of the muted tweeter is coated in something white that looks a lot like aluminum oxidation.
Are there any futher troubleshooting steps I can take to diagnose them? Is fixing them possible or is replacement the only option? I'm not looking to spend a lot on these as they aren't mine.
Thanks

Time to buy new tweeters. You can shop here or eBay for some used ones, which average about $20.00 each. New replacement tweeters from Polk will run you $48.00 each.Political Correctness'.........defined

+1. It is most cost efective to replace them and they can be found fairly regularly for sale in the $20-25 range used. The Family

This is pretty f***ed up right here. -
Thanks for the responses. I've been browsing the threads and it looks like these things have peerless tweeters (wires angled down, holes in dome). Can I replace them with any SL2000's or do I need specific replacements to match the crossovers. For example, would these work?

I don't see any for sale in the Flea Market forum here. Any suggestions of other places to look.

Teryk,
Replacing the Peerless tweeter presents a bit of a problem. The cut out for the tweeter is smaller than the bezel on the SL2000 and it's RD0194-1 replacement. You'll have to enlarge the cut out, if you go that route. Finding replacement Peerless tweeters isn't easy. Of the replacement choices, the RD0194-1 is the better tweeter.Political Correctness'.........defined

Personally, i'd wait till a Peerless tweeter showed up on Ebay and replace it with the same one. while nothing wrong with the RD0194-1. i like to keep the Monitors as original as possible.
those tweeters show up on Ebay every so often.. but if you can't wait.. then get the RD0 replacement. Do not trash them or part them out.. if they only need new tweeters and are in decent enough physical condition.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?
