Monitor 50 vs. Monitor 30

Hey gang,

Along side with upgrading my sub, I will be upgrading my current front speakers, the Monitor 30s', with the floorstanding Monitor 50s'. Will I notice a difference in clarity, range, field? Also, would I even need a subwoofer with the 50s' (I've heard some people do, some don't.)? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)

Oh, and two more things, my reciever puts out 110W per channel; would I need a seperate amp to power these baby's? And lastly, these will be going on carpeted floors. Are these very easy to tip over? Like if one of my cats, or my future child were to accidentally love-tap these, will these fall over? Thanks!

-Tom

the monitor 50s have much better bass response and cleaner highs. towers usually sound much better than bookshelves.

you need a sub, the 50s will hit much lower than the 30s but nothing like a powered sub.

You can get a seperate amp if you want to, but not necessary with these entry level speakers.

umm, its possible if hit hard enough...

I listened to the M50's a bunch of times, I really liked the 50's when I listened to them side-to-side with a set of 40's. Sub will really be required to get that bottom end, with my 70's the Sub is still a great addin.

So/so feeling on the tipping, they are a tall skinny design... Would not take much effort to tip them over... lol

Thank's for all your replies! I went ahead and purchased a pair of M50s' and they sound phenomonal!! Was having a little difficulty because the system kept shorting out. But got it fixed and it sounds beautiful! Thanks for all of your inputs and suggestions! :)

    Now they're back to $25X.

Keep an eye on www.onecall.com, the 60's a good speaker at the cheap price.

Onecall also has the Athena AS-P4000 on sale for $149.97

Agreed. Even the 70s dont have much bass, but with a velodyne that's not really a problem :)

bigger speakers usually sound better, wants wrong. I know that just say an lsi bookshelf will sound better than a monitor tower, but im comparing apples and oranges here. in the same price range, bigger speakers usually sound better, aren't I right?

i guess it just depends on the ears. To mine, the lsi9 is the best of the series. I just like the sound of a good bookshelf speaker over the tower equivalent. Just me.

well, i don't have much to compare to. The only polk speakers I have heard is the monitor series and RTI towers... When it comes to the monitor series, I think the 50s and 60s sound much better then the monitor 40s and 30s. but in other series models, maybe you're right.
