New SDA-SRS Owner / Bi-Amplification Q

Well, having spent the last six (or so) hours reading everything that had anything to do with 'SDA-SRS' speakers, and having won a pair of such a few hours ago on eBay, I almost feel like I know some of you!

I do have a question for those who likely experiented with bi-amp'ing the SRS's. Am I correct in my summation that there is some disdain for this configuration as compared to a more powerful single amp setup? Specifically, I was thinking of using my two DH-500's setup as one for HF and the other for LF. Further, since I read (and have no reason to disbelieve) the nominal impedance is 4 ohms on the SRS's...is this true for both the HF and LF parts when seperated? My Haflers are nicely modified so I should just about be at exactly 1000W per speaker at 4 Ohms...sounds like some earth-shaking fun to me! I've already got a friend with a truck lined up to go pick up the new SRS's...what a nice addition to my CRS's there going to make!!! (hopefully it'll be tomorrow! :D )

Chris welcome to the forum and congrats on your SRS find.

I have the owners manual that gives the specs and instructions on bi-amping but it is at home and will be later this afternoon before I can help you.

Bi-amping is nice....just don't forget to remove the jumper wire. I forgot to do so and instantly fried one amplifier and was plain lucky that I didn't damage the other amp nor my SRS's.

All the manual gives is "5 ohms D.C. Resistance" but it does say that "it's ok to use a non-common ground amp on the high side and a smaller amp can be used there as long as it has excellent headroom".

    HI,

I'm new to the Polk Club and have just picked up a pair of 1.2tl's. When I connect the interspeaker connector wire it shuts off my Denon receiver (110 rms) when I turn it up. Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jack

More power and more power, it is not the innerconnect you need more power. What happens when you listen at 0900.

    Jack,

Are you sure that your receiver is a common ground design? (i.e., the ground connection of both channels are tied together). Most receivers are common ground, but there is the occasional odd animal out there.

If your receiver is not a common ground design, it will see a dead short when the interconnect is attached.

you will want to buy a seperate amp for your 1.2TL's your Denon will continue to shut down every time. there is no way it has the guts to power 4ohm SDA's.

Look for a stereo amp that can handle 4ohm loads.

No disdain, it's just that different people have obtained different results.

I found that the amount of improvement, if any, depended on the amps used. Experiment to find what sounds best to you.

1.2TL's are 8 ohms, or at least the literature says they are "compatible with 8 ohms".

The original SRS's are 4 ohms.

    Jack,

You might also check to make sure that something is not mis-wired inside your speakers.

I second the wiring check before you run off half-cocked to buy an new amplifier. Basic troubleshooting went the way of the Dodo around here.

Contact polkcs@polkaudio.com or 800.377.7655 for an SDA SRS 1.2TL wiring schematic.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Firstly WHICH SRS's do you have?Secondly do you know about the common grounding issue with Polk SDA's?Using multiple amplifiers means that you have no common ground between the channels.Read the owners manual (if you get one)and the back of the speakers when you get them.I may have sent the seller of those speakers an e-mail reminding them to alert the winner about the common grounding issue.

Look for the thread on this site that asks a question about the power needs os SDA-2's and you will see some very important information there.

I had my SRS's biamped for many years with two Adcom 555's until I purchased my 565 monos that I still use today. They work best with two identical amps. I had also tried a 555 on the low end and a 545 on the high end, but found that the tweeters still needed the higher output of the 555 to have a balanced sound.
