I purchased one of the 1st sets of Polk SRS's in the state of Michigan so very long ago.... After 4 DBX soundfield ones {that was a bit crazy}

Please help with the following 3 items {I have about 18 years of impatient waiting to get my music back and thread searching is something i hope to avoid}- I am not that great with technology. slow.... rural dialing internet

But help?

My original amps have been dusted off and a Perreaux 3150 drives the tops and the Perreaux 2150 drives the bottoms. The 2150's have a switch for mono and I was wondering if this should be used? {I am not comfortable with trial and error with impedance and curious if this mono-block approach would complement the SRS's}

Also, My interconnect cable is old {obviously} and a new one is wanted.

Lastly, these are beautiful speakers and I would like to update to whatever new items I could - Is there a cross-over or speaker change that is appropriate?

Thanks to all! these speakers provide insight to the meaning of "hurt so good"

    Welcome to the forum SRS.
    There are several great threads here on updates for SRS. The search feature will let you bring up darqueknight's superior crossover upgrade. He is "the man" when it come to SDA talk. Just look at his setups in the system showcase.
    I am on the same path with you so feel free to ask questions.

    Just run your amps in stereo so you don't have to worry about the issues with monoblocks and SDAs.

    Good Luck and Welcome to CP

    Welcome to the Forum SRS! Try doing a search on crossover and tweeter upgrades. You need 8 of the RD-0194 tweeters. Customer Service at Polk can help you for tweeters. If you have the blade/blade interconnect, Polk can sell you a new one. If you have the pin/blade, plain speaker wire will do. There is a lot of info in the threads about SDA interconnect wire, tweeters and crossover upgrades. Please post specific questions if you have them. Thanks for joining us!

    Thanks Knight - I was hoping for a bit of conversation to go along with the search engine... but after some fun idea exchange with the thread database, it appears that my beautiful set of Polks are SDA-SRS with serials 2711 & 1502 {i will search the threads for any significance with this potential numbering curiousity}

    But according to this thread there is 'no replacement parts :'
    http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=500&highlight=srs+piano

    Now according to Knights insightful thread -there is a lot I can do BUT am concerned with my ability to modify the cross-over and I have not found a thread on a workable solution yet.... but I will keep looking :)

    The silk dome RD0194-1 that Mr. DarqueKnight points out seem like an item to try. Of course, I called Polk but the customer service person "was not familiar" with this model and passed my question to someone else who was supposed to call me back but has not. Maybe there is a thread on this?

    1 set DBX Soundfield One's Cherry - waiting to be heard again
    1 set DBX Soundfield One's Oak

    DBX 4bx
    Perreaux SM3 {soon to be Krell}
    Denon DP2l {Rosewood} with Grado Signature
    872 purchased CD's
    and of course the 1/2 speed masters for the Grado

    Assorted 'new age' stuff
    Surround sound 7.1 HDMI
    HDTV
    FTA
    DVD +R,-R, RW
    etc. etc.

    Some vintage?

    That's unusual that Customer Service would not be familiar with the replacement tweeters. Your current tweeters are the SL2000's. They have a nasty 5 dB spike around 13K that can bring chills to your spine like fingernails across a chalkboard. The RD-0194 tweeter is a drop in replacement that takes about 5 minutes per tweeter to replace. They cost about $48 each. So the initial investment to replace the tweeters will be about $400. Do this first along with getting the interconnect cable to connect the speakers together. I believe that you have the pin/blade connector. However, only the blade is carrying a signal. Some members have used a single copper wire with a spade connector on each end to connect their SDA's together. For some information, search pin/blade interconnect. You should get a number of hits on this. Here is one thread on the interconnect cable. http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13476&highlight=pin%2Fblade+interconnect It also has Ken Swauger's email address (Polk Customer Service). Ken is very helpful.

    In summary, I would get an interconnect cable, a homemade one will do. And a set of replacement tweeters. You can also call Ken at Polk's customer services number. Tell him you are a new Club Polk member. I believe they will provide you free shipping.

    Again, welcome to the Forum and keep posting. This Forum does not have a lot of active members so it may take a few days to get some feedback from members. We're glad to have you aboard!:)

    But not unheard of. Twice, when I called to order RD0194's, the person taking the call didnt know what I was talking about. They also didn't didn't initially believe me when I told them there was a discount for Club Polk members.

    No, but the better informed you are, the better the questions you can/will ask and the better someone can assist you. Sort of like a "speaking the same language" kind of thing.

    Sure, but only if you like starting electrical fires. The SRS's (and all SDA's) require a common ground connection between left and right channels. Otherwise the amp will see a short circuit and this will initiate a series of unfortunate events. Some SDA's can use an isolation transformer to allow them to be used with non-common ground amps, but the SRS is not one of them.

    If your mono amps can be run with a wire connecting the negative (ground) connections, you can use them with your SRS's. Check with your amp manufacturer to be sure.

    Am I reading this wrong?

    Are the SRS he has bi-ampable, if so he can horizontal biamp, one on the tweets, one on the midwoofs, and be just fine? That's what I read anyway.

    The SRS's can be horizontally biamped, provided the mid-woofers are connected to a common ground amp or an amp that can be configured as common ground. There is no risk of shorting with the tweeter circuit since it is not connected to the SDA signal path. Therefore a common ground amp is not required.

    SRS when you call customer service ask for Helen. I know for a fact she can help you. Also the low serial numbers of your SRS have me questioning the pin-blade configuration crossover, mine have higher numbers and they are blade-blade.

    Thank You Gentlemen & much respect to all for taking the time to help a guy out !!
    And Dennis... :):) yes, very retentive - because to me - a CD can be a psychoacoustic replay of a memory of a place or time. {much more then a wow! Those vocals are actually coming from the middle!}.
    Exactly 872 over the years because they are not just a stack in the corner with mismatched covers or a limewire/internet compilation disc of greatest hits.

    Wait until you hit my age and memories have a unique value that you never plan for.

    Peace & thanks for the communication
