Can Polk MMC6500 be damaged by a cloth cover

Hi,
I replaced my 2004 Nissan sentra rear speakers with a pair of MMC6500 recently. They are connected to the factory amp through Blaupunkt PCA2120 and a preamp signal adapter to the factory receiver.

When I installed the speakers I just replaced the factory speakers without removing or making any modifications a cloth covered panel that was originally used to cover the factory speakers (like a grill). Can such a setting damage the woofers because of the sound reflections from the cloth?

I am asking this because, I noticed recently that the sound quality has diminished (there is something wrong with the bass output), but I am not sure if it is due to damage to the speakers or because I keep fiddling with the amp and preamp signal adapter gain controls.

Thanks.
Anand
