Hey guys I sat here this morning and I watched a movie and messed with my DVD player a little bit and I got it to Dolby Digital EX so I'm thinking if I mess with DTS a little bit I'll get DTS 96/24 and ES Discrete, Matrix to work. But what really is the difference between Dolby Digital and DTS. By the way I have a fiber optic cable going from my DVD player to my receiver and I have all 7 channels working too.

DTS, it is said, uses lower compression.

How 'bout actually listening to something and making you OWN conclusion. Novel idea, I grant you, but like peace...give it a chance.

Perhaps if you mess with that fatty matter between your ears it will work too. Then again, perhaps not.

Hey guys can anybody tell me what would be a good setting for my receiver as far as like DB levels go on ur speaker level settings. Right now I have all 7 speakers set all the way up (+12 dB). Is this right? Cause this doesn't seem right to me. Even with all levels turned all the way up, I'm still having to turn it up to like 35 and 40 to really watch a movie real good.

Leave the levels at 0. You should have to turn the volume up high for movies. They are very dynamic, so quiet dialogue will sound soft even when you think you have the receiver at a decent volume. When something explodes though, it will be loud as hell. If this pisses you off, you can turn on dynamic compression. This will keep everything around the same volume level.

As far as you mising surround modes. Movies need to be recorded in those formats to use them. You won't get DTS from a movie that doesn't have it on the disc. And even then, you'd need to select it from the audio trakcs menu on the disc.

Look on the back of the DVD at the bottom. There will be a list of the surround modes and languages the DVD is recorded in. Shrek for example has a DTS logo. This means you can use the DTS feature of your receiver. If the dvd does not have DTS then you can't use DTS.

If I have everything turned at 0 dB and you said it'll sound soft and then explosions will be loud then should I turn my center up to 12 dB then instead of 0 dB?

I think the heating when idle is actually caused from the unit being on but not sending any signal to the speakers. When this power is sitting idle it creates heat. I have a panasonic receiver on my kids game system that does this, gets hot when idle but runs cool when cranked. My Denon however doesn't do that, it's cool when idle and warm when cranked. Maybe a difference in amplifiers in the two brands. Maybe some of the more technologically versed old timers could elaborate on this.

Well, I'm here to tell ya, I'm here to help !

I believe that the problem calls for a simpler solution, ie, perhaps your starting at an audio equipment level beyond your comfort range. With this in mind, I did quite a bit of searching and have found the following:

    1.JPG

Description: This phonograph is exactly what you need to play all of those wonderful records that you have saved over the years. Although records are hard to find these days, record players that work properly are even harder to find. Leave it to Fisher-Price to invent a small lightweight record player that plays both standard 33 and 45 speed records, has quality 4-inch speakers, and simplified controls that make life so much easier. The phonograph comes complete with it's own built-in carry case for easy portability and storage. Designed for children ages 4 years and older.

    http://www.thisoldtoy.com/L_FP_Set/toy-pages/800-899/825-fisherpricephonograph.html

    One caveat, though:

Please use with extreme caution as this is an electric product !

This is not a battery operated toy ! It has a plug-in cord !!

In the name of all that is Holy, please be careful.
I would recommend a ground-strap, securely fastened to your ankle and attached to a good ground source in your house. The incoming water pipe in your basement would be an excellent source. Keep that grounding strap short, though. I'd recommend a maximum of 3 feet.

Glad I could be of assistance.

Well, no. For an upscale solution to your radio needs, may I suggest :
