I have an Onkyo TX-SR503 and in the manual it says I have the following surrounds modes:
Direct, Stereo, Mono, Dolby Pro Logic II Movie & Music, Dolby Pro Logic IIx Movie, Music & Game, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS 96/24, DTS-ES Discrete, DTS-ES Matrix, Neo:6, Mono Movie, Orchestra, Unplugged, Studio-Mix, TV Logic, All Ch stereo, Full Mono.
But I dont have Dolby, Dolby Digital or DTS, DTS 96/24, DTS-ES Discrete, DS-ES Matrix at all. Did Circuit City sell screw me on a receiver or does my model just not have all that?

Sometimes, a single instruction book can contain info about several other models. See if you see a "*" beside, say.... "DTS Matrix*" You'll get the info on the bottom of the page. ex. *only offered on models xxxx and xxxx. That's all I can think of.

If you at all are sincere in figuring out, your best bet is to go back through your manuals as the devil is in the details. If that doesn't work, I'd call the customer service # for Onkyo...they should be able to help you w/setup.

Also another thing about my receiver is even it being plugged up and turned on not running or anything volume turned all the way down it'll get hot, just like your playing it loud for 5 hours.

That's stupid. How would CC know if it's jacked up? Was the box sealed?

The short answer is, yes, you have all that schtuff.

    Click here: http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=TX-SR503&p=f&class=Receiver.

Now, as to your receiver running hot when turned on but not running anything:
The 503 does have what Onkyo calls an H.C.P.S. transformer, or "High Current Power Supply". That's good.

Now, it's not capable of putting out the amount of current that higher-end schtuff does. Some of the old-timers on here run gear that you could arc-weld with, for gawd's sake. (that's REAL good :) ).

But, it should not get hot, it should not even get warm, if merely turned on with no input being amplified.
Their power supply uses some fairly fat filter capacitors. You may have a problem with one starting to go to ground.
You'll probably want to get that checked out by a tech.
Make SURE before you do that you have everything connected correctly on your end.

Oh, one other thing. You mentioned : " Polk Audio Monitor 40 ([On floor] Both speakers pushed together behind couch in middle against wall) " being used as rear surrounds.
    Uhm.......well, ......uhm.......5 problems with that:
    1. On the floor
    2. Pushed together
    3. Behind counch
    4. In middle behind the wall.
    5. Used as rear surrounds.

Other than that, no problem ! I'd suggest you move those 40's to the front, get them on 22" stands,
seperate them properly, and break them in. If you've had them as rear-surrounds since you bought them, they're probably still "green" (Heck, they're probably about ready to die of boredom !).
Take it easy on 'em at first, after a month pound 'em like a rented government mule. Afterwards, sit back, and enjoy !!
Their sound tends to sit in the back of the box, at first; maybe that's why you assigned them to the ignoble position of rear surrounds. If so, follow the previous advice.

"Dolby Digital EX, DTS 96/24, DTS-ES Discrete and DTS-ES Matrix"

You only get those if your DVD player sends those specific digital signals to your receiver.

Since this is a question about a product you actually own - I will give you a little help.....

One - DD and DTS will not be available unless you have a digital cable (coax or optical) connecting your DVD player to your reciever. If you use the standard right/left connections - no surround sound. (ok, you get simulated surround, but not discrete...)

Two - "Dolby Digital EX, DTS 96/24, DTS-ES Discrete and DTS-ES Matrix" are all 7 channel modes. If you are running in 5.1 you will not have the option to select most of these modes. (or if you are running in 7.1 but have your rear speakers turned off in the reciever. - it may come that way by default)

Ultimately - follow the advice already given and go over your manual paying attention to your DVD and speaker setups in your reciever.

    Good luck,

    Michael

Gonna say this, but mcloki and The reaper beat me to it. I have an SR-502. You can't just force it to playback with a certain decoder when the source isn't giving that specific one. You can do things such as break up a DD source to a stereo if you wanted. Or go to an all channel stereo, but for the ones mcloki mentioned you need specfic stuff. If you have a 2 channel you can let pro logic have some fun.

For those who are interested, Sound and Vision did a test report on the 503 for its January 2006 issue and here are its lab numbers. This little receiver has been getting rave reviews in recent month, despite the fact that its replacement, the 504, is already available on some e-tailers' website (it's so new that the 504 doesn't appear on Onkyo's own website even though the owner's manual is there to download). For the record, the 503's predecessor, the 502, was also ravely reviewed in a recent issue of Sensible Sound.
