Oh man, this thread can only go down hill from here! I'd like to take this oppurtunity to thank the University for bestowing this great honor upon me and sapping ungodly amounts of money from me....wait a minute! Just think of the system I could have gotten with that money! Man, what was I thinking!?

    Thanks guys.

    Aaron,

Good job, what do you plan on doing with your education? You can't create computer viruses anymore, those are only for the college students that have too much time on there hands.

    Good luck,

    Aaron,
Congratulations, quite an accomplishement (for a schmuck like you) you should be very proud (and your parents relieved to get you out of thier pocketbook). Hopefully you can put your education to good use (another internet **** site) for the benefit of mankind (and geeks who can't get laid).

Enjoy, Congrats and welcome to my world.

    Troy

P.S. note the lack of another shameless reference to your rears.

Good job, what do you plan on doing with your education?
Now there's a good question. You know, I went to college thinking I wanted to do processor design for a company like Intel. Here we are four years later and the last thing I want to do is hardware-related stuff. I enjoyed this stuff, but I found that I prefer programming, which is what I thought I didn't want to do. Really, I don't even care for the computer science kind of programming I did in classes.

What I've found that I enjoy is web application programming. I had been doing graphics design since my early high school years for my freelance business, but had only dabbled a bit with web design. In college I really got into it and did some sites professionally for my freelance business. This past year I've started to get into the web application arena, and I really like it. It combines the things I like about programming with the things I enjoy about web design.

So, I'm looking for a position as a web application programmer. It's kind of a shame, because this kind of a position isn't an engineering job. It's basically an information systems type job. I could have saved myself a lot of aggravation these past four years by being an information systems guy rather than an engineer. However, I know I wouldn't have gotten nearly as good of an education nor would I be able to call myself an engineer (bragging rights).

I'm still looking for a job, but the market is pretty rough right now. I've been seriously considering starting my own company with a friend from college. My backup plan is to work at the local hi-fi shop, but my parents would probably throw me out of the house if I did that. Ah, well. I think I'll find a job shortly, though.

Damn right! The plan is to snag myself a new HS system ASAP. This will also depend on my living conditions. If I'm still living at home, there is presently nowhere to put my system. The basement will need to be finished. Unfortunately, I have a strong suspicion that my car's suspension will need to be replaced this summer, so there goes a significant chunk of change.

It also helps to have bits of knowledge in different aspects. I got my Microsoft certification (MCSE) about 5 years ago, and I hit the job market with high hopes. I found a lot of places do not want or can't afford (more likely) a full time network engineer/ graphics designer/ web developer/ desktop support person, but they probably have a need for all of them. I dabbled in HTML before getting in to networking, but never thought seriously about it (this was in the age of IE 2).
But when more tools became available, like ASP, web design took on a lot more importance and value. Now it's a big part of what I do, along with the rest of it. I also don't live near an urban area (pop around 35,000), so your experiences may differ.

I guess my point is... it's beneficial to have interests in more than 1 aspect, and it's impossible to second guess yourself because the technology changes too fast. :)

I've been in IT for about 7 years now, and I think things are bottoming out and starting to get slightly better. I've seen lots of positions opening up for web dev. and other programing positions. I'm a network admin/engineer, and I have hardly seen any opportunities for people in my area. You've got a good shot IMO.

Start your own business if you can, but don't be affraid of the market right now. There are jobs out there, they just aren't giving them out like candy as they were 2 years ago. Best thing to do is put together a portfolio/website with all of the web work that you've done. Maybe even a digital resume on a CD-ROM with the websites on them.

    Good luck!

    Aaron,

The education is always good to have. I got my bachelors in Management (concentration in Finance). I did accounting for a year and now I am a CCIE designing networks. My degree has helped every step of the way.

You need to go to Hawaii this summer. Once you start a job you never know when you will make it again.

I think so. It's hard to tell, because the whole thing looks like it was done by hand.

Yeah, that's about what mine cost (about $130k, I think). Makes you wonder if it was really worth it, doesn't it? Where'd you go?

I've made much more than that in my 7 years of IT since high school. Sometimes I wish I had gone to college.... but most of the time I'm glad I didn't. :D

Let us know about that first job!

That would be a dream job wouldn't it?!?! Actually.... I know a few guys with a hosting business that do mostly ****. heh There's good money to be made there.

I'm in Austin, Texas. The good ole sillicon valley. I figure most cities (unless you live in the sticks) should have good high tech jobs. Sure the market is a little rough now compared to a couple of years ago. So it takes a little longer to get a job, but you can still get one.

I'm very curious to see what kinda job Aaron gets with the degree.
