Wow, I didn't think that I would get this much reaction! ZenDragon, I am leaning in your direction. I went and heard some LSi9's and 7's today, and was mighty impressed with them. Sounds like the majority of the people here would lean more toward compromise and keeping the marriage intact.
I know that she hates my subwoofer, so maybe the couch idea isn't a bad one either!

Yeah, my wife has given me grief about a couple of upgrades I've done, but once she hears the improvement, I don't hear another word about it. My HT and 2-channel systems are my domain. She has her domains, too, and believe me when I say her stuff costs a lot more $$ than mine. In fact, if I did the math, I owe myself another huge upgrade. Hmmm.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

The LSI series have very attrative and tastefully finished cabinets. Have you shown her some photos? I think it is a great compromise.
Take her out and show her the LSI speakers, then hop on over to the DVD section and pick up The Titanic to demo the new set-up on. Ply her with wine and tell her what a good recommendation it was on her part to go with bookshelf speakers.
Sending out good thoughts for you. ;)

I own a pair of Rti100's, with a Marantz SR6300 receiver and a Velodyne sub. In the old house the Rti's blended in with the woodwork and sounded great for the music that I like, such as REM; in the new house, according to her, they dominate the living room, but still sound great. She doesn't like the idea of bookshelf speakers, as they are still too big. I have thought about buying satellites, such as the RM101's; five of them and placing them around the room, as well as in-wall speakers, such as the LC65i or B&W CWM800. I am concerned that the sound quality that I am used to will be compromised. We do movies pretty infrequently. I think that I will be getting an ultimatum soon, so does anyone have any suggestions? I know what you are all thinking, but the wife stays!!

Tell the wife "Tough!" Then tell her to get in the kitchen and make you dinner. LOL. J/K. Seriously put the task on her. Tell her that is she wants to pay for a pair of speakers that sound as good that she likes then go for it, but she has to find the deal and you have to approve.

Unless you're considering a massive sized floorstander, I think the physical floor print is basically the same between monitors & most floorstanders. The only difference is in the height. In other words a monitor on a good stand is taking up nearly as much real estate as a floorstander. On the other hand a floorstander w/ a gorgeous wood finish or piano black finish actually adds to the decor of the room. Talk about cosmetics, show her different finishes & how it adds to the beauty of the room. If that doesn't work pack her bags & get yourself another women!!!
