I own a pair of Rti100's, with a Marantz SR6300 receiver and a Velodyne sub. In the old house the Rti's blended in with the woodwork and sounded great for the music that I like, such as REM; in the new house, according to her, they dominate the living room, but still sound great. She doesn't like the idea of bookshelf speakers, as they are still too big. I have thought about buying satellites, such as the RM101's; five of them and placing them around the room, as well as in-wall speakers, such as the LC65i or B&W CWM800. I am concerned that the sound quality that I am used to will be compromised. We do movies pretty infrequently. I think that I will be getting an ultimatum soon, so does anyone have any suggestions? I know what you are all thinking, but the wife stays!!

Hmmm... Given the criteria, I got nothin'. :D

Well, a good set of in-walls can certainly be had from polk. When I went to the polk gathering at polk headquarters we got a demo that really opened my eyes to what in-walls can sound like. I'm afraid I don't remember the models but they sounded as good as standard speakers to my surprise.

Go down to the book store and pick up a copy of "How to win friends and influence people." It's all about other people winning. Works like a charm.

If you own your home.........have someone call your house while she is certain to answer and pose as the architect or contractor that you have hired to build the new theater room.

Or show her this solution from http://www.jamesloudspeaker.com/speakerdetail.cfm?id=44

This will shed some new light on the situation. You won't have a chance in hell of buying anything for awhile without asking, but I bet the Polk towers won't have to seek a new home.:D

Marriage is all about compromise. I'm sure there's a laundry list of things you have compromised on lately with the new house. Give her time, she'll get accustomed to it. If she doesn't, tell her she's gonna have to choose between what you already have (RTi100's) or a pair of Lsi15's powered by a new amp. Give her the opportunity to choose between those two options.

It may be time for a pre-emptive talk with her. While it is certainly possible for a tower to dominate a living space, I can not imagine what the problem with a bookshelf speaker is.
It sounds like you are willing to work with her if you have to, but the bookshelves absolutely belong on the table as a compromise.
There are certain times...uh cycles during which it may be more difficult to reason with her, but bookshelves are a more than generous compromise on your part..use your own judgement. We're all pullin for ya.

Hell, no! Don't punk out and go from RTi100's to in-walls or a surround bar. It's either another type of floorstander that blends better with the decor or a pair of bookshelves. Period. If you must, tell her that bookshelves can be conveniently set aside when not in use, so they won't present an aesthetic issue.

There are certain areas where a husband must always take the lead -- automotive repairs, buying tools, weapons, beer, and the sound system. Stay true to your manhood. If she wants to **** about it, just ignore her.

Marriage is a partnership! Both of you have equal say. Find a compromise that BOTH of you can live with.

Coming to an agreement on a pair of speakers should not be considered a challenge to your so called manhood from the woman that you love.

Marriage is NOT ALWAYS a 50/50 proposition. As with any "relationship" there are times when one side or the other simply makes a decision and the other has to accept and live with it. It is that way in life, love, business etc. Those who say that you must always be in 100% agreement to maintain the relationship are wrong. If that is the case life will be one neverending negotiation....there are times you give in and times you don't. It depends on what is important to you.

I agree with this Shack. However, why do you guys always associate these types of WAF threads with threats to your manhood? I find the whole idea idiotic that trying to come to an agreement about something as minor as speakers as somehow a threat or an attack against your character!

    Cathy, i agree.

that's why my suggestion of the SurroundBar is a good compromise... i think if more people heard them.. they would change their minds. It's a great solution.

Ah, some you guys are a bunch of wimps.

EricBep just moved into a new house. I'll bet his wife had the final say in the which house would be purchased. If not, she certainly picked out most of these things: the furniture, the drapes, the wallpaper, the carpet, the landscaping, the paint colors, the kitchen cabinets, the countertops, the tile, etc., etc. etc. Now we come to the speakers that they already owned in the other house and EricDep is expecting an ultimatum from the wife who will say they have to go? Are you kidding? Doesn't sound like much of a compromise.

Mine doesn't even bother anymore. We used to argue alot, but in the end I wind up doing things my way anyway. I don't give in when it comes to my sounds. Period. It's my little world, and I plan to keep it that way.

Now remember, I have given certain concessions to get to this point. But if this is a partnership, certain allowances need to be made in your favor, too.

It is BOTH of your living room. I am sure you could set up your rig tastefully, and she will have to accept that.

    You'll work it out....
