Anyone think the 'standard' meant anything in the first place?

HA! I took all my Polks, my Marantz, my JVC player and my Mits to Skywalker Ranch and paid Lucas to bless them personally at a THX Baptism.

Yeah, I sleep much better now.

Just think of all the people that will have to get re-certified now. I mean the placement options and desk acoustics of pc speakers must be a whole new realm.

...and don't care to know about...

I'm sure the class is fun and a good learning experience, but I do know THX has little to do with proper setup of an audio or home theater rig. Especially the gear they state is 'certified'.

Not saying it's bad gear, some of it is nice (did they not certify some Atlantic Tech and M&K which are great home theater speakers), but they have also certified some mediocre at best gear (Klipsch Promedia, and some offerings from JBL in the late 80's-early 90's).

Room acoustics? Positioning? Hell, people were doing that in home and studios before Lucas was an itch in his daddy's pants......

Don't take offense to an opinion, especially when it runs with the majority....

    Cheers,
    Russ

I don't take offence, you don't need to take advantage of what they have to offer. You guys are all to good for that.

Make your point Dan, speak your peace... Obviously this is bothering you a bit. You are the pro, right? Educate me, tell me what THX has to offer me. Give me some links, I'll get my read on... ;) The only THX related item I have is that Re-Eq button on my Oink...

I'm sure THX has some good things to say, good advice...but is it original? Is it anything different than Dolby Labs, than Matt Polk, or any sound professional in the industry? I'm just asking....

As far as I can un-educatedly see, the only real neat contribution THX has made, are the openers before the movie starts....

    Cheers,
    Russ

my .02 is that I'm not saying THX is a bad thing, but I am saying that it is entirely possible to have a perfectly satisfying experience without it. To say that you HAVE to be THX cert'ed to be worth anything is BS.

    FROM DOLBY
Question What kind of Dolby Digital receiver, DVD player, speakers, etc. do you recommend? Answer Dolby Laboratories cannot make specific recommendations of home theater products. Licensed products sold...........................................................1,071,970,000
    Surround decoders sold............................................................61,398,250

    Professional Products

    Other Information
Dolby films are mixed in 43 countries.
There are 164 distributors of cinema products in 58 countries, and 52 distributors of professional audio products in 53 countries.
Currently, Dolby Laboratories partners with 1430 media licensees, 146 implementation licensees, and 299 system (hardware) licensees in 41 countries.
Dolby Laboratories has been granted 616 patents in 28 countries, and 645 trademark registrations in 95 countries.

    IMO-
In the 60's they received $2000 per 8-track for Dolby noise reduction plus royalities for each sold. What do ya think they get now?? Bet its more then THX! They have their hand out just as much as THX. THX just advertises more IMO. I wouldn't care if any of my equipment was certified by either. Just my 2¢. BTW nothing of mine has THX on it.

    Look,
I never said or implied that you have to have THX in order to experience music and movie's.
My point is they have alot to offer.I got trained on THX in room accoustic's, THX theory and setup. They take great amount of time setting up a room. They also bring in some of the finest soud engineer's in the world.I have met 2 of them.
For years I was here nor there about THX.I thought it was like a good house seal of approval, most if not all THX certified equipment is good stuff.
Onkyo and Integra as most of you love so much, put tons of stock in THX.They swear by them, they deal with THX on a regular basis.I am Integra Trained. We had a rep come in and train us on Integra and Onkyo products/history and future of the company. They are a proud and good quality.
If you talk to all manufactors that wear the badge of THX,they are extremly pleased with it, not just because it sells more product.Just the re-eq that THX designed is a helpfull tool in getting your system to sound it's best.
Remember this, you don't need THX in anyway if you don't believe in it.You guys bash it enough to make your points.
Just one more Point...the new surround format by Dolby labs surround ex???was co devoloped by Dolby labs and guess who???
I enjoy THX because of all time and effort they put in to what they do.They are some serious people when it comes to Rereproducing movie sound tracks.Today they are looking at multichannel music as well. The new THX ULTRA2 spec's are quick interesting.
Theres a lot to learn from THX but again if you don't believe in them, there nothing there for you.
