Has anyone heard anything about 8.1? Is it in the works? Will it be? Will we just have to wait until 6.1 is the norm for listening for a manufacturer to think the extra 3 channels over todays standard is worth it?

i herd there is a 10.2 in the works too

is the .2 in 10.2, two seperate sub signals?Welcome to my home, enter of your own free will and leave a bit of the happiness that you bring. -D

Can't wait for the manufacturers to come up with a real thin speaker that resembles a wallpaper border that goes all the way around your room. Add a couple subs and you'll have 360.2. Imagine trying to balance that with an SPL meter!

People are having a hard enough time incorporating 5.1 into there homes let alone 10.2, 8.1 even 6.1/7.1.
I think the industry needs to slow down.
I never heard of the 8.1, where did you hear that?
10.2 is a new thought of THX.I don't know when that will hit the market.I assume not for at least another year.Dan
My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
Tech tv had the 10.2 sourround. I had posted a link here about it. But now it is gone.
Interesting story about it. It was going to be out by the end of this year if I was not mistaking. BUt it was going to be more of a movie theater thing. And it was THX -
The 10.2 format was originally developed by Chesky Records for music reproduction. I remember reading about this over a year ago. I'm guessing the THX 10.2 format is probably completely different and unrelated.

10.2 was developed by Tomlinson Holman (eXperiment, re THX) several years ago and has been demonstrated at trade shows since. He has started a new company to develop this format (I can not find the link, nor remember the name) and other products. Information on this format can be found online in trade show reviews and other sources.
Recordings for this format were made by Tom as there was no other source. I have not heard that others have been making recording in this format (why would they as there is no market). I know that David Chesky is making 5.1 recording, but have not heard that he is making 10.2.
The .2 is for stereo subs along the side walls.
I have never heard of an 8.1 proposed arrangement. Current formats that I can quickly recall are: 2:2.1, 5.1, 5:1.1, 5:2.1, 6.1. There is no 7.1 that I know of (maybe this will be the next standard). The :1 and :2 refers derrived channel(s) that are not fully discrete.
The 10.2 format may not arrive until some of the current Format Wars episodes have ended:
Episode I Dolby (5:1.1 or 5:2.1) vs DTS (is a fully discrete 6.1 I believe; I may be wrong)
Episode II DVD-A vs SACD
Eposide III ??
Episode IV Analog vs Digital
Episode V Beta vs. VHS
Episode VI 16 bit vs 20 bit -
I have never heard anything of 8.1. I merely figured that it would be the next most logical step. I had know idea 10.1 was already in the works. So I guess my next most appropriate question is WHERE THE HELL DO YOU PUT ALL THE SPEAKERS? I figured if they would be using an 8.1 it would add a rear center to 7.1. But I am dumbfounded as to where the speakers would go for 10.1. Is it that you would have 4 surround speakers on the sides? The guy with $40.00 mains and a $700.00 subwoofer.

Actually SDDS is 7.1. I don't know if it is discrete but I know that they have two front channels. then two sides and then two rear surrounds and a full range subwoofer.
www.sdds.com has all the info. BTW, this is also only for commercial movie theaters. -
10.2 is defined as referenced from your listening position:
center: 0 deg
main : +- 30 deg
vertical surround : +- 45 deg AND 45 deg vertical (up)
front effects : +- 60 deg
rear effects : +- 110 deg
rear center: 180 deg (you do not need a stereo pair in the rear)
.2 subs : stereo LFE subs placed at the +- 60 deg speaker locations
This will recreate a 360 deg image with vertical definition as well (ie. a plane passing OVER your head, not through you).
I have wired my new sound room to this format (as well as a rear stereo pair for 7.1) for future compatability. I do not wish to retrofit any additional wiring at a later date.
I do not expect to see this format for several years, if it ever is available to the consumer market. -
