Will a car sub work well in a house? For HT mainly I am not all that worried about music bass. Also should I worry that much about the Q as stated it will primarily be used for the movies. Thanks

A high Q sealed box works OK for HT in a small room. I used a sealed Kicker 2x10" box way back (with the necessary active crossover and amplifier) and it worked fine in my livingroom. If your room is very large it probably wont cut it. A ported high Q box would cause big problems but a sealed one rolls off nicely and uses the natural bass boost small rooms have.

I am thinking 2.25 to 2.72 cubic feet sealed depending upon which woofer I choose. If I go with the Type R I would have DVC, and be able to utilize both channels of the previously stated amp. If I go with the MTX 4000's which are only SVC I would run two fifteens stacked in a corner shaped enclosure at 2.72 cubic feet for each driver. The latter being cheaper even with two woofers. I am still contemplating the sonotube. Again thanks Ron for the help. I am asking about car woofers because well I can get them cheaper than the Tempest. I also have heard two tens hooked up in a similar fashion, and it was pretty damned in your face bass which is essentially what I want. I am not familiar with what you are refering to when you give the box a Q. If you could please elaborate. I know your music tastes will determine your needed Q when speaking of woofers. With that in mind I BELIEVE I could get away using a moderately Q'd woofer of about .49. Again I feel I must state this is what I believe. As we speak MTX is sending me literature on their 15" HT sub. They reccomend that as opposed to the DIY. Partly I believe they reccomend that because they can make a little more "coin" if I were to purchase that. Their stated reasoning was 100 watts is really better suited power for an 8" woofer. But hmm Ron is only doing 100 on a much better woofer, and kicking bass ****! As a side note does anyone know if that Onkyo will run 4ohm stereo withought getting hot enough to roast marshmallows over it? I found on their site that their more expensive amps have 4ohm ratings but not the M282. I don't know if someone got lazy when typing the information on it or if it won't do it. The sub has been temporarilly postponed because I went ahead and checked the price on the RT55i and the RT35i. If I don't buy them before they go back to Polk I will be a true fool! I am still asking for information on the project because it has not been cancelled, but merely postponed. Thanks for the help on the matter.

    briancs,
I'm not a car sub expert, and I'm not a big fan of building your own sub's.I think it's neat like what Ron P did with his sonotube, without hearing it,I can't form a true opnion. You questions might be better directed at the car guys.
To answer your questions the best I can, give it a try,the ohms running on the Onkyo should be ok for a while but over time that kind of load will wear it down, receivers and 4 ohm loads are not always a good mix.Staying in the 6 to 8 ohm load area is better suited for receivers.Flagship receivers can play 4 ohms without worring about it,they have much beefier power supplies and bigger caps.
A home theater needs to sound just as good as a music sub.Sloppy bass is sloppy bass nomatter where you apply it.Tight accurate bass down to 20 hz with no roll off is whats desired to recreate the movie experience in its fullest.
If you build a sub for the home, post back on your results....i bet it will be ineresting at least.
