Hey guys I just got a sony 9000es dvd player at a good price, since I live close to the guy. I can't wait to try this out, its quite an upgrade over my old $20 Sony. I figure its a good transport so if I want to upgrade in the future I can. Anybody else here have this player? What do you think of it?

Guys the player arrived today and is absolutely awesome. The picture is quite good, but the audio is phenomenal. I am listening to Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms" SACD and it is unreal how good this sounds:)

    DaGame,

Just curious. . . I'm in the market for a universal player as well (SACD/DVD/DVD-A/CD). What other models did you look at, and what's the going price for the Sony 9000?

I've done some research on Marantz 6400 and Pioneer Elite 47 up to this point. Looking for any insight a fellow polker can offer. Would like to stay $200-$300 for used.

Andy, the Sony 9000es is great, but not a universal player. I had no need for DVD Audio because I already had a bunch of SACD's. They normally go for around 450-500, which is the around the same price as a Denon 2900. That would be my choice for a universal player in this price range. The only flaw I have read about with this player is it will vibrate a lot with a scratched disk. From what I have read it does outperform the Denon 2910 for about the same price.

I had a 2900 for years and it never had any vibration problems.

Another good choice is the Pioneer Elite 79avi. The PQ is excellent and the audio is outstanding.

    Thanks for the advice, guys.

I'm hoping that when everyone starts to buy HD-DVD or Blu-Ray players in the coming months, they'll get rid of their old components to raise some scratch.

Hopefully, I'll be able to snatch up a very good Universal player for cheap :D

Cambridge Audio DVD-87 plays everything for 169.oo
very good PQ, exellent color saturation and rendition
    very good Audio, decent DAC's

It's not the performer like the Marantz or the Denon, but if your looking for a 'very good' uni-player until the prices come down on the new tech, then it's a very listenable unit for little scratch. You might even be able to get some $ for it when you buy the latest and greatest.
