Anyone know anything about Moles? Ya, the furry little creatures that dig holes in your nice beautiful lawns, leaving mounds of dirt behind?

Ya, those.

Just spoke with my rental house rentors today, who advised that my entire front lawn had been infested with the ungodly creatures. Anyone have any idea how to get rid of them? Or at least make them stay across the street? :)

Besides dynamite that is.. tho I must admit it was my first idea. :D

You need to get rid of the food source. Then they leave. Spread a nasty dose of diazanon or some other toxic substance on the lawn to kill all the bugs and grubs. You'll never win a frontal attack, you gotta starve em.

Yep. This will do it. Or you could do what my dad and I did once and actually catch the damn thing. Let me tell you, that was hard. I'm still not sure how we did it. I mean, catch it alive and release it elsewhere.

Battling a similar problem - got a squirrell that has made it into my walls. Not the attic mind you but in the walls. I started taking some baseboards off and opening electrical outlets but haven't seen anything. I've dropped some mothballs in but he's def been back.

About 4:30am he rattles a wire for a minute or two and that's it.

I believe I've seen the hole on the roof and will seal it temporarily this weekend. I say temporarily since I want to be sure I seal him out and not in - and that there aren't baby squirrells in my walls that will die without mom.

I really don't want dead squirrell smell in my walls. Vermin!!!!

    Any other suggestions?

Hmm, but I like big guns, and things that go boom! :p

I'll have to look up this "Diazanon" stuff. HD or Lowes carry it? Or would it be specialized?

    Thanks for the tips.

Flood it out. Stick that water hose down into the burrow trail and they will be flushed out. Then dispose of them. It may take 30 minutes or so before their trails fill with water, but they can't breath and can't burrow faster than the water can fill.

Old wives tail method. Gallon pickle jars filled with water placed around the yard next to their burrows scares them away from your yard into the neighbors. It sounds crazy, but I've seen it work almost immediately.

This method could work because they are nocturnal in nature, and something in the yard when they come out scares them away. Ever actually seen one in daylight? They also only burrow in unoccupied areas. (I've never had one in my back yard where the dog resides), but my front yard is riddled.

Sounds like an instant irrigation system...

A good "mouser" cat is a great choice.

Home Depot and Lowes both carry a rodenticide specifically for moles. Issue with this method is that a month later the smell will tell you it worked.

In any case a load of sand is in your future. Once eliminated, their tunnels will start to collapse.

Thanks Tour and I'll be heading to the Depot. I can't waite to smell ther rotting little effin bodies.

Snare traps placed in the runwaysis usually the most effective way of getting rid of moles. You can use an insectcide to try and get rid of their food source, grubs and earthworms, but as someone pointed out, this is not always effective. And having earthworms in your lawn, is a good thing.

Some of the local sod farmers, will use castor beans or castor oil in their runways, which is more of a deterent. Their is a commericial product called molemed, which is nothing more than castor oil. Personally I like killin the little ****.

My uncle had a farm and used this trap that used a "U" shaped wire that is spring loaded and goes through the tunnel. When the rodent hits this U wire it will pull th U up and trap it between the U and the top of the tunnel. It basically strangles them. The problem is if a neighbor kid finds it and hurts themselves then they will own your house after years of lawsuit battles.

My wife got PO'd at the ones burrowing in the yard last year, and I watched (yes, a little intimidated) as she nailed 4 of the first 5 with our .22.

We pushed the bodies back down the hole... our neighbor said others will stay away from the dead bodies. They never did come back, and I try not to piss her off...
