Make sure that you are in Dolby Digital mode and not DTS. The Late Night option will not work with DTS per the owners' manual, page 57, pasted below. You need to use the menu settings for the particular DVD to change between the two modes.
Late Night
The audio for movies made for the cinema have a large dynamic
range; thus, the difference between loud noises and soft noises is
great. To hear the quieter sounds such as background noises or
human conversations, the movie must be played back at larger
volumes. When this setting is set to High or Low, the dynamic
range of the sound is narrowed down to allow you to easily hear
minute sounds at low volumes. This function is especially useful if
you wish to play a movie at low volumes during the nighttime.
This can be set to either Off or Low, or High. When this
setting is set to High or Low, the dynamic range of the sound is
narrowed down to allow you to easily hear minute sounds at low
volume.
Off: Select to turn off the Late Night function.
Low: Select to narrow down the dynamic range.
High: Select to further narrow down the dynamic range.
Notes:
The Late Night function is effective only on Dolby Digital
encoded software.
The depth of the Late Night effect is determined by Dolby
Digital software. With some sources, it may produce little or no
effect.Robert Gray

yup
that's what the manuel says allright.
on the next page thertes even a chart showing that it only works in the 3 listed Dolby modes.
(Dolby surround is listed)
But, it doesn't work.
there appears to be a "tree" as far as depth of sound field settings, and i never know if i'm hitting them, of if some how there some are layers over others. if i hit "Pure", i beleive i am getting a strait, unmessed with audio signal.
I'd think i could get the late night mode with the "Audio Adjust" with DOLBY Pro Logic II (the chart on page 59 offers it as one of 3 dolby modes taht works with Latenight), but for me, i get NO funtioning beyond bass and treble when i hit the "Audio Adjust" button. NO SOund field funtion offers ANY setting beyond Bass and Treble (i am using a Polk speaker Set up, so my SUbwoofer is set to OFF). I'm guessing this a If you have it one you can see what i'm talking about thing,
All in all my neibors are pretty damn sure i have a Tyransaurs living here, and Black Sabbath sounds Sweeter than i've ever heard (Never seen them live), so i'm mighty pleased with the purchase, for the money, this rig just rocks all foundations.
I genuinly feel like i've re-discovered Music and Sound.
thanks for the time reading this, and thinking about it, and for any "futzing", i appreciate it so very very much. -
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I agree that the Onkyo is a great receiver. My 20 year-old Sansui receiver blew a month ago and took both Sansui speakers with it. I bought the Onkyo TX-SR600, 4 RT25i's, a PSW350, and a CS245i. I am using a Bose Interacoustic 2000 for my rear surround. Audio rack, TV rack, and speaker stands (all by Sanus) rounds out the system. The entire family plus visitors are duly impressed with the sound capability. Now, if only my 15 year old 27" RCA monitor would self-destruct , I'd have it made.Robert Gray

the late night mode is accessed through audio adjust when it is in dolby surround so if its not there then it would have to be a problem with the receiver...

IS PCM the BANE of my existance?
What is it? (Pulse code modulation?)
why can't i play the blade runner DVD with out this lighting up.
(it wont play if it's not lit up, BR is a Dolby SUrround 2 channel disc) - do i really have to juggle a bazillion settings, to get each (type of source) to it's optimum output?
man, i thought these elctronic gizoms made out lives easier.
and no, matter what, i can't seem to find late night,
or anything beyond bass and treble
thanks for any thoughts and time

Hell no, I sure didn't hand type from the manual. In Acrobat, you need to be using the TEXT SELECT TOOL (just hit the letter V on your keyboard to use this tool). Highlight the desired text and then right-click and select copy. Paste where you want.Robert Gray

Thanks robertgray,
I love this computer stuff, AND this Sound Stuff,
i think i'm gonna try to get Onkyo on the phone,
THis jsut HAS to Work, or i'm getting a new unit,
(oh Goddess, now i have to deal with the "to get banana Clips, or not" conundrum.) And i thought licking Drugs and Alchohol 17 years ago was hard. Sheesh, if this is as bad as Cigerttes to quit, there's no way!)
but so far, as addictions go, this isn't bad.
thanks again robertgray,
