alright, so i come home and the wifey says exactly what i didn't want to hear after a long day of busting my arse... "the receiver is saying protect, what does that mean?" And, of course, my first response was "how loud were you playing the thing? were you trying to vacuum, etc.." That being said, I have an HK 240 that runs in stereo mode (therefore supplying 65 watts to each front speak), a psw10 hooked up via the subout, and speakers set to small with a crossover of 80 Hz. The kicker here is that this puppy has never been pushed over -40 in volume, and generally resides somewhere between -55 to -45. I know this because my wife must have suffered some genetic mutation sometime before me met, because anything louder than her thoughts is too loud. Indeed, the WAF IS protect mode. :D Now, I know that these are fairly large speakers, and that more watts would be optimal, but they're not exactly LSi's -- 65 watts should (IMO) be enough to ensure that I am not underpowering the fronts (but who knows). To shed further light on everything, I was able to get the AVR out of protect mode by switching the sub from standby to on back to standby. Could it be that lower freqs were being sent to the sub, and not being enough to wake it's lazy **** up, were sending the HK into protect mode? Or is this to be expected with my gear? Or is this a sign of a larger issue? Any ideas? Mucho macho grassy arse ladies and gents :)

    Sounds like a genuine electronic problem, not an incompatability issue. The only time underpowering speakers is an issue is when you are trying to drive them too hard.

    Also check for frayed wires? Maybe your + and - are touching somewhere.

    something else...
    when checking the wire connections, i discovered that a little bit of the plastic casing on the positive wire had found it's way into the right speak binding post... so it's poss the connection was not "optimal" (by little bit, we're talking a shade under 1/2 mm)

    I think she turned it up to loud. I hope she is off Protect Mode. It actually could be any of things discussed, but lets just say she did.!!!!!!!!!

    Good point, my Parasound has to have 7"-8" minimal clearance from the top, or it will shutdown after about an hour. Exactly what the manual recommended, imagine that!

    Since I've had it in the new rack, where it's got plenty of room to breathe, it's never had a problem--even when running all day.

    you know RT, she was acting kind of shifty -- maybe the mailman was rockin' the casbah while i was working to pay the bills :eek:
    steve -- i'm certainly leaning toward the ventilation angle, the only caveat being that the unit was on less than 20 min before it did this (though it remains on "standby orange" at all times)

    would a power surge have a permanent effect, or is that the point and purpose o' the "protect"?
    i really want to avoid lugging this thing to a service center, just because it decided to thumb its nose at me once -- but if this is indicative of a major issue, i'm more than happy to comply...
    otherwise, i can just sit back and wait and see if it happens again?

    My Panamax went into protect mode one time and my rcvr went with it.
    I did not have the t.v. and cable hooked up to the panamax at that time. The set was hooked up to the rcvr. by way of the rca and s-video and I think that is why the rcvr went into protect.

    There have been reviews elsewhere of people with certain HK receivers going in protect mode, while other owners with the same models experience no problems. HK's tend to run hot. So provided you are following all of the above recommendations above you might wanna contact HK about a replacement. Im sure they have heard this problem quite a bit.
