As SOME of you know, I'm not the world's thinnest guy so about three weeks ago, I decided enough of being a three toed sloth and strapped on my trusty running shoes. First couple days, my whole body hurt and was ready to die after a half mile.

Today, I made it two miles without stopping. It still sucks and it still hurts and I almost puked but I'm getting back into shape....

A friend's husband died suddenly recently and as some of you know, I've had my own issues to deal with. Long and short is, I want to live to be a crusty old **** so hi ho hi ho....it's off to run I go.

Good for you, last time I ran I made it about 3/4 of a mile without stopping.
    It sucked so I quit.
I need to start doing something because I want to get crusty someday also.

I know your pain. About 5 years after I got out of the Army I decided to start exercising again. Now in that 5 years, I put on about 45lbs, which may not sound like alot, but when you've spent the better part of 30 years weighing 135, 45lbs is ALOT.

Needless to say, I got about 1/4 mile and thought I was gonna die (keep in mind, I ran 11 minute, 2 miles in the Army). So anywho I'm about 170-175lbs (which is just right) today and the warehouse job keeps me in good shape with alot of lifting, moving, etc.

Go for you. But make sure you keep running by that Mcdonalds, and into it!

I'm not over weight (maybe a pound or two, I just don't gain weight), but I need to start exercising again. I dropped out of Teakwondo when my second was born (5 yrs ago), and have been too lazy to go back. Now when I run at all, I can feel that my muscles just don't want to work (I feel like it looks like my father runs). I’m planning on re-signing up this spring (hopefully it will happen).

What's this 'running' thing you speak of? Is it a drinking game?

The only running I've done recently was to the Chinese buffett line.

actually, there is a 'drinking club with a running problem'. it's the hash house harriers. they've been around 70 years and they're worldwide. lot's of partying before, during and after.

about a year ago, my longest runs were 4 miles. i wound up walking home 2 miles :D . around 6 months ago, i got the bright idea i'd run a marathon  after much pain and training, i did it! on 1/29. i tried to run again today. i'm not fully healed. my knees are f----d.

anyway, set a realistic goal and stick with it! good luck!

Seriously, good on ya for commiting to the fitness regimen! Just curious, do you have a yearly fitness test/benchmark where you have to run 1 mile in under 10 mins in uniform and the like?

Best of luck to ya bro. I started back in November, walking 2+ miles a day. I have also changed my eating habits, massively. I recently joined the gym, have lost nearly 15 pounds and have never felt better. You will get there, just keep a positive attitude.

running is good. summer evenings i usually do around 3 miles around town. it's amazing how fast stamina builds but more amazing how fast it diminishes.. if you can help try to get out and run everytime you are supposed to. don't put it off.

Walk, don't run. It's actually healthier for you. Still good cardio with no knee problems. Swimming and **** are great, too. To lose weight, change diet permanently and exercise regularly.

One more thing no one has mentioned is stretching.
It is real important to do a proper stretching routine before and maybe even after the run.

That is the funniest thing youve ever posted Russ. Made me choke on my Newcastle!

Keep on running Troy, and ignore the naysayers about knee pains. Warm up and most importantly COOL DOWN after a run, wear proper running shoes and dont try to kill yourself and youll be running long into your 70's.

But if you really want to be studdly, start weightlifting! Then youll be a chick magnet. :p

Good for you Troy! Remember it's not so much the distance, but the consistancy in your exercise program. Stay with it, change up the routine or the places you work out to keep it fresh. Monitor your blood pressure. Machines are everywhere. A steady program will ensure that you will be that crusty old ****. ;)

Actually more Important. Most people avoid stretching and get injured.

Troy after you get back from running, I suggest looking into Yoga.
