Ok, need 1 last part....a sub!
Finally getting the ball rolling on my HT setup. Picked up my receiver yesterday (Onkyo 603) and getting ready to order my speakers in the next week or so. Getting RTi4s for the front, CSi3 for the center, and some R15s for the surround (plan on upgrading them later down the road). Now for the key, a good sub to go with all of this. My budget is set at $300 for a 12" sub. I have been looking at the 12" Dayton sub, but after reading some recent reviews of them on other forums, there may be some QC and other issues with the latest offering. My attention then turned to the Velodyne VRP-1200, but it is a little out of the price range right now.
Some background on my room. 19'x13'x8' with the seating on the back 13' wall, entertainment unit up front. This system will be used 90% movies/gaming, 10% music (if that). I do listen to concert DVDs if that sways my music estimation.
Any opinions on those 2 subs, or any others would be very helpful (so would some links to sales )
Thanks!

If you only have $300, save up to about $500 so you can get a Hsu STF-2 or entry level SVS. No point wasting time with a weak sub for a room of your size. I have the exact same size room, BTW. The Dayton subs are great, too. Don't rule them out. Parts Express has great customer service if there's ever a problem.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

I agree on the new Dayton subs, QC is not up to snuff on the first batch. You should be able to find a decent price on the Velo in your budget. Your next best option is the Bic Acoustech H100 or Cadence XSub both ~ $250. Early is right about saving, the Mirage S12 from Vanns is a steal @ $400 shipped, the Hsu or SVS PB10 (my favorite) are in a different world than the budget subs.

For $300 you should look in not used much entries like SVS, HSU, Rell or any sub that is fast to keep up with your small book shelfs. You donot have to get much power say 150w and up. Happy hunting.

After some more research, I am really leaning towards the Mirage S12 for $400 shipped. I can't find any bad info on it, and that is my cap, $400. Almost another $100 for an SVS is just too much. I think I'll be more than happy with it.

As a person who had the vrp 1200, I was very dissappointed with it. I work at circuit city and every vrp (10 and 12) we have had and used at the store has been blown. Now I know at the stores the get used very hard but when I had mine at home I was always afraid of that happening. And to tell you the truth, the thing never turned on unless you put in a movie or turn the volume up high then turning it down again (which to me is annoying in the first place). Lastly, the bass to me was... dissapointing. It doesn't "rattle your house" like people say. So I got rid of the VRP and got the DPS 10" instead, and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! At circuit city, we have had two Dps 10" on display since it came out and it sounds just as good as the day it came out of the box. The bass hits so much harder and cleaner then the VRP 12" ever could. VRP is velodyne's cheapest model and the make it that way. I might have gotton the DPS a lot cheaper but It is DEFINITELY worth the extra $100 for the dps 10 " . believe me. So If I were you(and if you decide to get the vrp thats fine with me, just giving my opinion), I would save up a little more cash so you won't bring a sub home and be dissappointed like I was
hope this helps

Well, looks like I spoke too soon, the Mirage is out of stock again...
back to looking again. -
I don't have a lot of HT experience, and I've just recently updated my system from old 2 channel w/ Bose 901's to 5.1. I have all the same components as you, including the Onkyo 603, except I have RT5's as front R/L. My room is is also very similar, 21' x 13' x 8', with an openening into another 12' x 12' room.
After much research I decided on the svs pb10, and it's really great. Deep & loud, it really does the job. I paid $429 + $40something shipping to PA, and I'm more than satisfied. The first time I listened, I was shocked at the depth & volume. Also, the guys at svs were great to deal with, returning calls & emails promptly. I'm an svs guy now.
BTW the r15's are working just fine as surrounds (esp. for only $99.00/pr.).bms

Thanks for that info bms, I really like that SVS, but thought I was getting out of hand with the cost of the sub compared to the rest of the system. If the Mirage doesn't come back in stock soon, maybe I'll just go ahead and get the PB10 and be done with it.

I still as of now wouldn't have bought an SVS (only because I got a new velodyne DPS 10" for $170) but when I decide to upgrade years down the road, that brand will be on the top of my list from what I hearAVR: H/K AVR240

+1 for the SVS. I have the 20-39 PCi and that thing is downright scary  The first time that PB-10 hits (I recommend the Darla scene from finding Nemo) your jaw is going to hit the floor.
