Well, I don't care about the traditional version because it's boring. If Whitney Houston had sang the traditional version, it would not have been the best anthem ever. What made it great was her interpretation of the song. Times change and so do musical tastes and preferences. The anthem is no different.

The National Anthem is absolutely different!! The National Anthem is NOT a pop song that should be tailored to the popular trends of the time. Countless people have given their lives for this country over the last 230 years and to cheapen the anthem of the country they died for is disrespectful to say the least not to mention wildly offensive

You want to put your "style" and "artistic flare" on music, stick to covering old Beatles or Stones music, dont **** with the National Anthem! You might as well say, "Old Glory is boring and we need to redesign it to keep up with the times so we can be in style." speechless-smiley-034.gif

As for the best renditions, Sandi Patti is the best Ive ever heard. I have it recorded and even after all these years I still get chills and a little teary eyed listening to it.

It should be a law that only she can sing the National Anthem!

I haven't heard it, but I'm curious why this is the first time that I've heard anyone complain about different 'versions' being sung when it's done literally THOUSANDS upon thousands of times per year/sport.

Intentional disrespect (ala Roseann) by not practicing to do the song justice is where the problem lies. I don't think I've ever seen someone break into dance and start BYE BYE BYE'ing the thing, so to say it's being Pop'd out is wrong.

Early B., I have to tell you man, I can't believe you typed that. No ****. I won't say anything else to you on this thread, because I can't believe you typed that. If I saw it come from somebody else it would've been different.

The National Anthem by a male falsetto is just not cutting it, unless it's The Vienna Boys Choir. Then I might cry. But a big, hulking, male, with posturing grimaces at strategic points for max "Look how hard I'm working" effect, along with fluctuations in tone and amplitude for no good reason, is a laugh and insult.

Edited for Brett - I think because everybody has been feeling this way for awhile, and this was so bad, it broke the alpaca's back.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, fellas, but you guys can stick to the traditionalist notion if you like, but it will never happen. Young people piss on tradition, especially when it comes to music. Since the flag burning days of the 1970's, there hasn't been any respect for American symbolism, and there damn sure ain't no respect for the national anthem. And in the future, you can't expect even less respect.

Nope, running a cable so guests could watch the game in the garage....cooking oysters and generally attending to the guests.

One of the best versions I've heard in recent years was when Jewel sang it for the SuperBowl about 4-5 years ago. I love Jewel anyways, but she did such a great traditional version of it. It makes my hair stand up when I hear it. Here voice is just perfect for it because she HAS the range to pull it off.

Dude, youve got to check out Sandi Patty's version. It WILL bring a tear to your eye or at least goose bumps. She sings the entire song, and since she can sing unbelievably high, she just nails the ending! She's a gospel singer so it is that kind of style but she doesnt add any "yodeling" or anything just effing nails it!

She sang this at the rededication of the Statue of Liberty back in '86 and just blew everybody away!
