It sure would be a great way to go, IMO, he still has a few years left. The steelers are going to lose one great athlete, player, and leader.

He is so beat up that he will be wheel chair bound by the time he's 50. I've never seen anyone so beat up by the game. It takes until Thursday for him to even be able to practice, its time to go.

He still has a few years to go? He's lucky he made it through this year.

I'm surprised they even make jersey's in his size.

He should retire, he will, end of story. HOF bound. Parker is both a prodigy and a schooled veteran now, it's time to move on.

A crybaby story happens everytime something sentimental happens when it comes to sports, get over it.

Considering how HOF voting has been going lately, I wouldn't exactly consider him a lock. Michael Irvin had 11000 yards receiving and THREE Super Bowl rings... and didn't get in.

The bus reminds me of the truly great running backs from the past -- Larry Csonka, Franco Harris, Earl Campbell, etc. Glad he got his ring.

^^ But Irvin does have that drug thing and was/ is a bit of a loudmouth... Bettis is a poster boy.

Agree that while he can still play and has the fire, that recovery time is the factor. Yup HOF and TV-gig bound for sure.

Off-the-field sstuff is not supposed to matter at all. I'm sure it DOES, but it's not SUPPOSED to.

Michael Irvin is a fu*k#p and should be allowed on the street yet alone the Hall of Fame. And yes it should matter what he does off the field! If we find out tomorrow that Babe Ruth was an axe murderer and a child molesting cannibal, so he stay in the Hall? It's all about integrity, without it you don't belong.

Very True - I have to believe that he'll get in someday though, outside of his off the field antics, he was one of the greats, in the same league as Swann, Rice. Irvin just had the ability to get to the ball like no other.

I am taking a stab here, but has any Cowboy receiver made it in? I don't think Pearson or Hill made it....(conspiracy, perhaps)

I went here and the only Dallas WR I saw was Tommy MacDonald, who only played for Dallas one year (1964) of an 11-year career. So no, no Dallas WRs in the HOF.

    Hey,

Mike Irving should be in the HOF and will get in, his off the field stuff should not matter, look at LT or go look up the history on Ty Cobb and out and out racist should we yank his plaque off the HOF wall, no all that matters is bewteen the line.

Nothing better than going out on top. Enjoy retirement Bettis.

Irvin and the HOF. Sorry, he doesn't deserve it. Art Monk deserves it well before Irvin.
Now the guy who should be in is Bronco Rich (tombstone) Jackson. One of the five best pash rushers EVER. Just ask the Raider and Chief OL's in the HOF. They'll testify.

Retired when he's just won a championship and before his body breaks down more. It's a smart move.

i'm going to have to second this....
hell, Andre Rison has nearly identical career numbers as Irvin, and no one would even consider uttering Hall of Fame and Andre Rison in the same breath
(and if i'm not mistaken, Rison has a super bowl ring to boot)
Irvin is just louder, flashier, and more visible -- and he played on "America's team"
    Art Monk????
until the Hall of Fame recognizes him -- zero credibilty
    and Lynn Swann?
check out his numbers, he's in the Hall and those stats are paltry (could it be his iconic catch?)
the Hall of Fame committee is a farce, plain and simple
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Swann was an "elegant" receiver. It was the way he played, noy his numbers that got him in.

Not sure about Rison having a ring... too much time in Buffalo...
