It's 4:00pm and it's my last day at this place. They say I'm supposed to be done on Feb 3 (which is today), but I never really got a good confirmation of that. I've been here all day, and haven't heard a word from any one (I work on a different floor than everyone else in my group). I still have some crap I was working on, that no one has asked for. I'm a consultant (programmer), and have been here almost 6 years (it was supposed to be a 6 month gig). More than likely they will call me back soon (they did it before), but I don't know if I want to. The money is good, but the comute is almost 2 hours (from CT through NYC into NJ. What a pain).

So what to do next. So far I'm thinking the following (in order of importance);
Drink Beer
Clean my garage (it's really a mess)
Play Xbox (bought 2 new games today)
Buy a house in NC, fix it, and flip it (my cousing called me today about one)
Start my own buisness (I'm thinking of getting into woodworking)
Convince my wife daily sex during the day is a good thing.
Take long naps
Make a lot of post so I am no longer a Polkateer

Let me know if anyone else has any comments, questions or good ideas.
Thanks.

Move to Kannapolis, NC and buy all the effing land you can around the old mill, and come back in about 5 years...
and sell it off for about 500% profit!

    Good luck Pablo.

That commute? 1/6th of your day spent traveling to and from work, and then the YEARS it will take off your life due to the sheer aggravation of it. Not a good idea.

Pretty much everything I do envolves drinking beer (that's why it's at the top of the list). If I do start my own buisness, I might have to move that one down.

The commute is really the biggest pain about this job (and the fact that there is no communication. I've been here all day, it's my last day, and noone has said one word to me about anything. I just don't get it [and they actually really need me here]).

I think NC is still up and comming, so I may do the house flipping thing if I can find a bunch (my cousin has a $600k house with a water view that you have to drive through a trailer park to get to. so the rest of the neighborhood can use some upgrading).

I also have an idea for a buisness, but I have to clean my garage first. I'm going to write a thread on it soon to see what people think (I don't know if there's a market, but no one sells them).

Yeah, get something in NC. It's a great place!

Best of luck to you as you start out on a new road!

Sorry if my memory is way off (which it probably is), but aren't you the guy I 'questioned' in a thread sometime last year who's a computer programmer and makes like $60/hr or something?

I hear you all to well, fortunately we have employees and bring in more money, but good God is it expensive. I posted all of the figures of our business for health insurance costs somewhere on this forum. It's ridiculous.

I'm not really upset about losing the job. I really was sick of it (and you were right, I did post earlier and I was doing $85/hr). They'll probably call back anyway and I'll get another month or 2 out of them. I put away some bucks, so I can hang and do what I want for awhile. Maybe I can turn something into a buisness. And now that I am out of work, I probably will start making my own beer (I already have a kit a friend gave me, just never started making anything).

Another thing. It was my last day, and I didn't hear from a soul today. I was still working on stuff and nobody asked me about it. There is still a bunch of source code on my computer at work that needs to be tested and put into production. Is it me, or is something strange about that? The place is run like crap. (And it's not a small company. It think they have like 5000 emps around the world [it's financial company])

    and hire hot waitresses/bartenders

spend all that time that used to be waisted in the commute to listen to your gear..

Pablo, that does sound strange. Perhaps they are in denial.
I would expect a call soon and they will nee dyou to come finish.
Then it is the standard emergency response fee of $150.00 per hour. Spend another month cleaning up loose ends and bank some cash.

More than likely any more work with them will be on a part time. If they do ask me to come back for just a bit, I'm thinking of charging them for travel time. Since my averge commute is an hour and a half (each way, and some times it's taken over 2hrs), 3 days would almost be a week worth of billing.

I also just got an e-mail from the contracting company that is creating the new software for them that will replace what I was working on. So I may just have something new already.
