Broken Grand (of the Jersey Grands)

Yesterday at 0800 hours, with a cup of coffee & some paperwork in my left hand, I attempted to walk passed one of the knucklehead pilots, who had his back to me while he was talking to another pilot. As I got right behind him he decided to shift the position of his feet. My feet were already occupying the part of the earth that he had targeted for his feet. My feet were already moving as well. I went down hard, never spilled a molecule of coffee, and absorbed the entire impact with a stiff right arm. Jammed it as well as one could. Hurt like hell, but by all appearances I appeared to have normal power arm mobility. That only lasted a short while. By 0845 hours (EDT for you sticklers) I could not reach up with my right arm to take my glasses off. WORST YET, I couldn't even put a Lucky in my mouth. EVEN WORST YET, I made a preliminary attempt to perform one of those personal hygiene maneuvers that should never be attempted with your left hand (if you're right-handed which I am) and I couldn't even get close. ER time! Bottom line...... a complete radial break of my right elbow. I have a splint and a sling on as I type this with my left hand. I get the full-arm cast today at 1100 hours, and it will be mine for 6-8 weeks.

The boys put up a picture of the knucklehead pilot in the squadron lounge, along with the blank sheet of paper for comments. I understand that the best one so far has him "Presently seeking a slot in the Federal Witness Protection Program under the name Dead Man Walking".

    George:
Broke the same bone though not as severely last memorial weekend. Slipped on a concrete pour float at a rental shop that had not been put away (looked like Charlie Brown when Lucy pulls the football away). Drove home in rush hour traffic with a stickshift, discovering sorts of pain when I tried to use my left arm. Only had a wrist cast for a month. Damn thing still gives me an occassional jab of pain when I lock my elbow a certain way.
Good luck in healing, make sure to eat healthy,
    Mark

    That's bad luck....
Hope everything goes well; if for any reason you are asked for rehab after the cast is gone, DON'T MISS IT....I know a couple people that thought they were smarter than doctors and now cannot execute all the movements their arms/legs were designed for.

So sorry that it happened George, but I can relate!

I jammed my left shoulder up real bad by breaking my fall off of a bike. I didn't break anything, but I couldn't move my arm for weeks.

All I could do was let it heal & take lots of ibuprofen/naproxen for pain & swelling.

Enjoy this relatively peaceful time, since the time you will really want to kill the big footed SOB is when you start physical therapy! :(

Keep us posted on your recovery.

Total bummer, I hope you heal completly.
I agree totally with HTrookie, take the rehab and pay attention.
I messed my leg up pretty bad in 1990 and seemed to be completly healed, well, after a few years I started to notice pains comming back and now I have to use the rehab skills I learned then to help stretch the areas.
Good luck on your speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear about the mishap George. You've got to cut the guy some slack though. We don't always notice the little people. Maybe carry a whistle around with you from here on out.

Get better. Take an extra Geritol or two.

Yup quite common with joints it seems. Once messed up, always prone to be problematic! If I sleep on my shoulder wrong it goes out on me! :(
