Setting Up SurroundBar with Dolby ProLogic

Hey there!!
I have an older (much older) Onkyo receiver (TX-SV4242) that only has Dolby ProLogic. I just ordered a SurroundBar and a subwoofer... the SBar came today, the sub will probably show up tomorrow. I hope to get a new receiver in the future but not for a few months.
But....
Being a new toy, I HAD to setup the SBar anyway and see what it could do. I know it needs the help of the sub for fullness of sound, but I thought that even on its own, the SBar should be impressive on some level. So far... not so much. Tried the Matrix "lobby scene" and the surround was pretty weak.... But I won't get all worked up until the sub is hooked up (although that should do nothing to impact the surround effect).
So, here are my questions.
1.) Am I gonna have any big issues in quality when only using ProLogic and not a newer surround technology?
2.) From what I gather, the sub gets the audio feed directly from the l/r channels... so I just hook up some speaker wire from the SBar connectors to the sub and away I go?
3.) Any recommended settings on my receiver? It doesn't support a sub, so I can't tell it yes/no to a sub in its settings and there is no "large" setting. Tried playing around a little with the volume levels of the center and rear channels.
I don't know ANYTHING about the differences between Dolby ProLogic/ProLogic II/DTS, etc, etc. so I could really use some advice to help me get the most enjoyment out of the SBar now, with current config, as well as advice on my next receiver (surround tech, power requirements, etc).
Thanks!

Just some power output specs on my amp from the ol' manual...
Surround mode:
Front L/R/C: 50w/ch min.
Rear: 15w/ch
What should I be looking for -- power-wise?
Seems like a good forum so far... I'll continue to devour all I can.
