Scored by Kobe Bryant in one game. That is unbelievably silly.

...and Kobe is a Guard, a frickin' guard.
All it means is you're one hell of a talented ball hog.
I think that with the talent of todays athletes and the level of competition, that this is by far the most astonishing feat the NBA has seen from a single player. The same team held him to 11 in their last meeting.
1. Wilt Chamberlain, Phi. 3/2/62 N.Y. 100
2. Kobe Bryant, L.A.L. 1/22/06 TOR 81
3. Wilt Chamberlain, Phi. 12/8/61 (3OT) L.A.L. 78
4. Wilt Chamberlain, Phi. 1/13/62 Chi. 73
Wilt Chamberlain, S.F. 11/16/62 N.Y. 73

7. Wilt Chamberlain, S.F. 11/3/62 L.A.L. 72
8. Elgin Baylor, L.A.L. 11/15/60 N.Y. 71
9. David Robinson, S.A. 4/24/94 L.A.C. 71
10. Wilt Chamberlain, S.F. 3/10/63 Syr. 70

Wow, Wilt has 6 of the top 10 spots, not too bad - noticed MJ isn't even on the list...
-
Yeah, but if he were still around, deep down, Wilt would probably wish he could have traded some of his scoring records for a couple of Bill Russel's championships.

I think one reason why Wilt was so successful in scoring was his sheer size, and the fact he was playing on a totally different level than most of those guys.

I agree with that, and he was a Center, which just makes last nights performance that much more remarkable. Athletes are in a lot better shape these days and the game is a million times faster. -

Oh yeah they're in way better shape than they used to be. Hockey is a good example. When you compare the speed of the game 20 years ago to the speed of today, its unreal! -

81 points is impressive. Kobe is still a Michael Jordan wannabee. Since Jordan left I have only a passing interest in the NBA. I catch a game now and then. Always watch the play-offs though. Kobe, IMO has yet to live up to all the hype. Wether or not it's self hype or by the media and fans. MJ is so much more complete on many levels. The main difference to me is Kobe has flashes of brilliance. MJ was brilliant all the time he was on the court and to some degree off the court. His practice sessions were just as intense as the real games. Kobe's had some great games and some great moments but that's a very long way away from what was acheived by many of the greats. It's also 1 of the reasons he'll never be considered an equal to MJ, IMHO.
Not trying to discount Kobe's skills......but he's along ways from many of the greats in the game and that includes MJ. When Kobe's career is done and over with, that's when we'll see how much he impacted the sport.

Agree. Kobe wanted Shaq gone so he could be the star. MJ was all about the team. IMOheiney9 wrote:81 points is impressive. Kobe is still a Michael Jordan wannabee. MJ wouldnt of been squat without Pitman. (and maybe Rodman)
Thats very impressive, 81 points that is.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

LOL...very niave POV. . Certainly a great player needs a good supporting cast. MJ carried the team on his back most nights....that's the way he wanted it. In many respects the original Lakers team wth Kobe and Shaq had better supporting players than the Bulls teams, on paper anyways. MJ is the main reason they won 6 championships, don't kid yourself. But they couldn't have done it without the team effort and the great coaching staff.

Kobe gives MJ a run for his money, he's just not as visually entertaining. MJ did things that nobody else could do. -

Mj was so much more than eye candy. The guy had an iron will and a sense of competativeness unmatched by many players in any sport. He had the talent to back it up each and every night. He also had the ability to help other players raise their own game to a higher level. Kobe is a great player but still falls very short of Jordan in consistency and his ability to move others on him team to that next level.
I'm not trying too make it sound like Kobe's a hack, because he's not. He just has a lot more to prove/accomplish to be considered in the same breath as MJ and the other b-all greats. I'm not just talking raw numbers.
Anybody remember Dominque Wilkins "the human highlight film". Certainly had a very high level of skill, but nowhere near what MJ had. I think in the end Kobe, although more consistent than Dominque, will be considered a great player, but not among the greats. Perhaps a great player of his short time.

The NBA in it's current form is a joke. I was one of the biggest NBA fans for years growing up and lost interest for a while in the late 70s until the Bird/Johnson era and followed the game until their departure. I watched some of Jordan, but it was the beginning of the end for me. Today it is simply a collection of shoe commecrials and highlight wannabes on the court.
There is a reason that teams like SA and Det have won the championships the last 3 years....because they actually understand the concept of team. As good as Johnson and Bird were, they embraced the team concept. What made them great is they understood that it was a team effort to get to the end, but in the end, they wanted the ball in their hands...and everybody knew it....which of course led to many easy assists.
Jordan understood team. He was the greatest player of all time...PERIOD! However, a lot of the blame for todays game can be put squarely on his shoulders. Today a player can take the ball back around his head, spin it, take it 3 feet over his head....and never get a carry call....thanks to Jordan's "crossover dribble". Anything short of Bob Beamon's or Carl Lewis's triple jump records will never be called a travel....thanks to Mike. Mike made it look like it was ALL HIM....even thought it wasn't (and he knew it better than anyone). Today most player's (like Bryant) want to be like Mike without embracing the team concept.
These "great" players embarrased the USA in the last Olympics. A lesser collection of non-stars like the Champion Pistons would have run away with the gold medal....as would many of the better college teams like Duke or UConn.
As I said, IMO the NBA today just SUCKS. Bryant is a loser, Shaq isn't much better. I see a little hope in James.... but he will probably grow out of it. I seriously doubt I'll ever sit down and watch and entire NBA game. Too bad....it used to be a great game."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

I agree Shack...the Nba has been in a spiral for a long time. Not nec as critical of MJ as you are as far as it being his fault. But the NBA is nothing more than a bunch of spoiled over-paid brats. With exceptions of course. Good post.

I never said it was his fault...directly. The NBA "allowed" him to do his thing in order to market the sport. He would have been the best player of all time without the stuff he got away with (and has become an accepted part of the game). The game has become "street ball" with numbers....and I hate it!"Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

And 1 mixtapes are not Michael Jordan... and Michael Jordan is not an And 1 mixtape.
totally different. Jordan didn't ruin anything that wasn't going to be ruined in the first place. Kobe is an exceptional ball player. To post numbers like that night after night can not be an easy thing to do. If he remains consistent and at this level of play he will for sure be remembered as one of the greats.
Kobe still has alot of time to develop too... the question is will he choose to get better or just ride the money train?
my .02
everything has changed and nothing is like it should be anymore - it's not one man's fault though it's just the change in the market. Street Ball tapes are a huge influence on young kids which suck because that ruins the game more than anything.
I was young when the And1 stuff started to surface and while alot of kids were tyring to imitate my close friends and teammates were learning the basics. It took us alot further.
Have you ever watched young kids play ball? It's almost disgusting... it used to be imitate Jordan (or whatever star)... now it's imitate "Hot-Sauce." Fundamentals have gone down the drain.
Sure you have to be talented to handle the ball like they do, despite the travels and double dribbles... but in the end that doesn't work and that's why they aren't running with any professional teams... and the one's that do know the place for flash and the place for hard nosed basketball.cats.vans.bag... -

Thanks Noel, I was going to say something but I figured what the hell.....I thought he was thinking of Elaine's boss on Seinfeld (Mr. Pitman) .

It did indeed sound weird.
Been oh so long since I watched/read anything NBA related...
I guess I could like...check first, but that wouldnt be as fun.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
As I said, IMO the NBA today just SUCKS.
A lot of these players are a lot talented than the players of old, most of them are also a bunch of thugs. The fact that Kobe Bryant and a lot of others in the league are this way doesn't take away from the fact that they have some very high raw talent.
The NBA might suck, but what he did is amazing, thug or not. Same goes for the NFL, lots of amazing players and lots of self absorbed thugs. Keeps some people from watching these sports, it's a turn-off.
I didn't come here saying what a great person Kobe was, I said what he did was amazing and he's an amazing basketball player.
As far as the MJ comparison others made, I didn't make it. Since it was brought up I will say for certain that Kobe is up there in that tier of player, but I still believe Michael Jordan was the best player the NBA has ever seen and still currently is. So please don't let your fanfare for a player take away from the achievements of a aquitted rapist. MJ wasn't exactly the family man himself, living in Milwaukee, and you in Illinois...I'm sure you've possibly witnessed some of the Jordan adultry that went on. Think old Wilt wasn't getting his digit soaked too?
