Hookup of older CD player to Denon 3805

I just purchased the Denon 3805 and have a question about hooking up an older CD player. I have an older (much) Sony ES 5-disc CD player that has both analog and optical outputs. I am assuming that if I use the analog outputs, the CD player does the digital->analog conversion, whereas if I use the optical output, the receiver will be doing the digital->analog conversion. First, is this assumption correct? Secondly, what would be the recommendation for hookup?

Thanks,

Ray

Your assumption is correct. Your Denon has a very nice array of Burr Brown DAC's. Try it both ways, but I can all but guarantee that using the optical out and letting your receiver do the DAC will be the way to go.
