question is, what will sound better. An in ceiling speaker that basically has no box or a bookshelf "type" surround speaker. These will be used as rear surrounds mounted to a cathedral type ceiling. Since they will be on a cathedral type ceiling they will be abgled down twards the viewing area at 30-40 degrees I would guess. They will be about 2 feet behind the listening plane. let me know your thoughts.

in ceiling would look better, for rears set to small, I would think the sound would be as good as a bookshelf speaker

I agree somewhat. Sometimes the inceilings sound a bit better due to better placement in the room.I really loe inceiling rear speakers as you have total control over placement. Inceiling speakers sound great.

I do not like the idea of inwall or inceiling speakers. I don't like the lack of mobility.
I have heard them sound prety good for mood music or whole house music but I have never heard any I thought would sound good in my particular application.
Free standing speakers are easier to tweek or switch out whenever you want to.
Of coarse who switches out their surrounds very often?

I thnk "bookshelf" speakers on adjustable mounts is better. If it was up to me I'd have it that way since I can angle it the way I want it to sound best. Plus it is in an enclosure that will provide the best acoustic sounds. In-wall mounted speakers are pretty sweet looking tho, cleanest install. For HT, my opinion would be "bookshelf."
