What happened to MTV?

Remember music videos?
If you can you are probably dating yourselves because everytime I see mtv they have some t.v. show on that has nothing to do with music.
I remember the first video I saw on MTV was Iron Maiden Run to the hills.
Being I was a rocker I thought this was the best thing to happen to t.v. :D

Now MTV sucks.
I think they should be forced to give up the "M" in MTV. Give it to someone that will put the music back in Music Television.
If they had half a brain in their corporate heads they would be marketing DVD's full of music videos.
I never see these but wouldn't it make sense?
I would think the kids would love to buy a DVD of their favorite preformers (artist seems to good a title for them) jumping around on stage.

This would be a good seller and all they have to do is group them together onto a DVD, market it and they would be at least making money from music.

Oh well I guess maybe I am too old for dating shows and cribs.

Yep, MTV sucks. I used to love watching it for the music videos. If it's not rap videos then it's a show and that about sums it up now, sad.

Someone probably figured out the rate of return for each video and determined that shows about drugged out kids and pre-marital sex was more profitable.

MTV has sucked since at least the mid 90's. it's time has come.. i'm frankly surprised they are even still on the air.. their ratings couldn't be very good at all.

I'm sure their ratings are fine. They cater to the same age group they always have - that age group just doesn't care about music anymore. Maybe some day they will again, and things will come back.

Maybe the whole "music video" medium is just run its course. For 15 years MTV has been more about "pop culture" than music specifically.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

The only channels left that actually show music videos as the majority of their programming are (1) VH1 Classic (which many cable providers do not carry, and in order to get on satellite you have to subscribe to the top tier packages) (2) IMF (International Music Feed; about 50-50 U.S. and non-U.S. material), and (3) Fuse (a good selection of modern hard rock and heavy metal; probably the best of the 3).

MTV and MTV2 are simply clones of BET any more. All rap/hip-hop all the time... and that's on the rare occasions they do actually play music.

I clicked on it and could not believe how it has changed. I remember "Head Bangers Ball" on friday nights. They also had a time when they played alternative videos. That was cool when I was into The Cure, Danzig, REM, Black Flag. They all had videos then.

It all went downhill after Remote Control hit the scene and then Metallica went commercial with their video for "One".

I agree with you 100% on the MTV sucking now. I grew up with it and it was a major part of my music exposure. Now I turn to it out of habit but have to turn it off 98% of the time. The videos that they do play arent even whole videos, they are like 30 second clips then they cut out... sad.

Having said that I have to disagree with you about the DVD's. They do exist. Most every major band puts out a DVD of either live or 5.1 mixed videos. I think the Eagles and NIN do the 5.1 thing best. Most every store has a Music DVD section dedicated to them. Even if MTV were to try to do this, the performers (or more approriately their labels) own the rights to the material, not MTV, so it would be hard for them to do this. Unless maybe they took an approach similar to the "NOW: This is music" TV commercials and made compilations. Honestly though I think the target audience of teenie boppers isnt that interested in well mixed DVD's.

True about the target audience. Young, teens, unemployed, broke, low self esteem because their parrents didn't hug them enough. These people don't have the money to buy music so they download it onto their Ipods.
No wonder they don't care what they put on the air, all they are selling is advertisment time.

There is a third MTV channel that only plays music video's now. It's like what MTV2 used to be. I get it with my digital cable but I never watch it.

I enjoy MTV and MTV2. Like Polk Thug said, who doesn't like hot drunk chicks? Plus I love Wildboyz and Jack **** :) Some of the shows are just fun to watch because they are so stupid.

Their ratings can't be that bad. They are filling two channels with the same stuff. How do you keep two channels on the air with no ratings?

    M is for Music.
If they want to be entertainment television then they should change the name to ETV.

I just think that it is sad they have gone so far away from their roots.

They should spin all their alternative programminig to another new channel. After all we only have like 1000 channels to choose from.

Actually it sounds like their new high definition channel, MHD, will have a pretty fair amount of music/concerts. At least until they start doing Real World in HD. ;) The new channel just launched yesterday, but only in a few Cox cable markets I think.

I think as kids we liked that stuff and now as kids they like the stuff that mtv plays now.
So we need to blame the kids for having no taste when it comes to programming.

I just got MHD this week. It is pretty cool; they actually play music videos. The other night I saw U2, White Stripes, Goo Goo Dolls, and Coldplay videos in the same hour that I had never seen before.

Amazing since when I was growing up as a teen we used to play "contests" on who could pick up which video it was before the text would come on the screen.

Only negative is that MHD is rock, rap, and country all in one although they do seem to play them in "blocks." I'm not much of a rap or country fan.

So far the only commercials have been to advertise MHD.

Regardless, I have it as one of my "favorites" channel and worth an occasional browse through to see what's on.

And sometimes thats a bad thing. I rarely watch MTV or VH1 - Im talking once or twice a year. However, At about 2am to 6am they have the insomniac theater or w/e which is just constant music videos of horrible songs...
