So if you have a HT system, do you listen to straight audio (no t.v.) on 2 channels only, 2 channels plus a sub, or all 5.1/6.1/7.1???

2 channel no sub on two systems and subs on the other two systems. Never cared for the 5.1 music sound because it confuses the soundstage for me. I prefer the soundstage up front.
-
2 ch mostly sans sub, but depends on the mains in the line-up. A couple need a little bottom end help form the sub. A couple need a lot of help.More later,

90% I am on 2 channel, no sub. 10% on 5.1 with sub. It's really mainly MC SACD for music, if I do, but since 90 percent of my collection is redbook, the default is 2 channel no sub.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

2 ch 90% of the time, dts recording in 5.0/ no sub, sda's do just fine for bass. Live or theater dsp settings for listening in other places than the living room.

Joe, modern technology gives us the ability to make good use of all our speakers, even with 2-channel source material, and we should take advantage of it. 2-channel sources contain(in varying degree)ambience which was originally recorded coming from the sides and back, not front(the majority of the sound in a hall doesn't reach us from the front)but is in the front two channels because there was no place else to put it. Processing such as DPLII and Logic 7 does a good job of extracting this ambience from the front and steering it to the surrounds where it belongs.

I've yet to listen to a convincing multi channel music setup.

depends on why I am listening.
If I am just sitting in the sweet spot then 2 channel most of the time.
If I am working around the house it is usually all channel stereo.Skynut

2 channel for music and depending on the rig it may or may not have a sub. 5.1 for movies or "music videos" where it is obvious the the only sound from behind is ambient crowd noise. I don't use m-channel even for SACDs (DSOTM is the only exception). DPLII is good for older VHS tapes that did not have a surround mode ...and even that is marginal IMO. Unless they have been remastered older movies are played in their origial format. I don't like the various DSP modes available on most AVRs and never use them (except for DLPII as mentioned above)."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

2.1 for me with the HT rig. Don't care much for 5.1 with music.

Try sda's, you don't need a center, rears, sides, tops, bottoms, or subs.
I think you get my point
