and while we're on TA, does anyone know of an external TA unit that can independantly do at least 4 channels, preferably six? all i need is time alignment, nothing else, cause the TA feature on pioneers is crappy, and i'd like to try it...
I wondered this too. It would be great if I could just buy an external processer that does TA so I could keep my current head unit.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Id forgotten about Rockford Fosgate making head units. Ill look into those. So far tho its looking like Eclipse is going to be hard to beat.
*edit
Well maybe they dont. Just checked their website and they dont have head units listed at all. Did they quit making them?polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

fosgate no longer makes radios...actually they never really made radios. They just stamped their name on some.

I like the look of that one, but the screen could be bigger..........
I'd like to see more screen and fewer space taken up by buttons that are so multi function that you don't dare try to change **** while you're driving down the road........comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -
Backing up to the Alpine 9855 (2005 model), it is not that bad of a h/u really. While it is nowhere near as adjustable "on the fly" as previous models (or current models without the "glide touch strip"), you can get very good SQ out of one of these.
I have played with them on the sound board in the Alpine dealer, and my brother bought one as an upgrade to a top of the line Clarion he was running. It did make a drastic improvement over the Clarion once it was properly dialled in. The 9855 gives you the option of Alpine's standard 5 band parametric EQ (or a 7 band graphic EQ if you prefer). There is plenty more control in the 9855 over a model with basic Bass/Treble adjustment controls, and that is part of the problem. It is not for beginners.
The 9855 has garnered it's share of hateful reviews on Crutchfield, and most are based on the "glide touch" control. There are people in the same reviews who swear by the sound quality they get from it though. The majority of settings done with the glide touch are not something you would be tempted to play with while sitting at a red light anyway. It is a complicated h/u, but fairly intuitive if you have any experience in how to properly tune a system. The graphics it uses to display crossover settings and corresponding slopes do make it very understandable when setting up these functions. The 9855 offers those who want the ability to adjust almost everything the ability to do so from the dash.
I have one "new in the box", bought for another install I will be doing. Based on SQ alone, I would be tempted to buy another for myself (if the price were right). After getting a chance to hear what this h/u was capable of with some careful tweaking (especially after seeing the spec's and lower voltage pre-outs on the majority of 2006 models) a 9855 is starting to look better than at first glance. Clearance pricing should make them look even better. Where Alpine failed with the 9985 is that many people who could afford to buy it had no clue as to how to use one once it was installed. Some high-end Pioneer units have the same problem.
Anyone dropping $1600 of their coin for Alpine's 2006 top of the line DVA-9965 h/u will get that same "glide touch" control. -
Yeah, it looks like Ill be turning my back on Alpine now. Elclipse is a strong option but they recently announced they wont be supporting the competition sactioning orgs anymore so they drop down my list also.
Those new Nak's look really cool. I have to admit it would be damn cool to have one of those!polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

I read a lot of reviews also that said that the alpine 05 models sound a good bit better than the 04 models did. That being the 9855 compared to the 9835.

There wont be an audible difference between the 05 and 04 models unless youre talking about different EQ and tuning features. Other than that, theyll sound the same.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

I have to agree. The glide touch thing is pretty much crap. Try to use it to look for a specific song on a cd. Unless you are stopped, it is pretty frustrating. But then again, I do live in Louisiana and they must have some of the worst roads in AmericaAlpine 9855 hu
