I did a shootout between an LP I recorded previously with my Acoustech preamp and the same LP which I recorded last night using the new Manley preamp.
The treble is sweeter, mostly because a little more natural sustain comes through, the bass was a little more extended and a little stronger (more authoritive), and the midrange comes to life a little more.
There was also a slight shift in tonal characteristics. The lower treble was a little quieter with the Manley. This tonal shift is slight and could be matched with cartridge settings on the Acoustech but would only be important if trying to make them sound exactly the same. Either characteristic is fine, just a little different.
The biggest difference is a noticeable quietness between sounds. This is what Manley does well with their current to voltage conversion FET design.
My overall opinion of the new Manley recording is that everything is ever so slightly better. Doesn't sound like a lot given the price difference of almost five times between the two preamps but the overall presentation is improved slightly and that is what I was looking for.
The main thing that floors me is that the CD recorder captures these differences! Them CD's, they ain't so bad...

Tonight I started fooling around with copying Vinyl again (this time with my PC), and remebered this thread. So is this still happening Chuck? I'm not trying to push you, I'm just curious. Hey...if something has come up, or if you're just too busy, I completely understand. Life is hectic.

Max, Are you considering using any tracks from the SDA playlist for your LP demo disc?

When I started this thread I was right up to date with the recordings I was doing for sda2mike. With the job stuff and all that started going on lately I have to put it off until I get Mikes stuff completed so I don't get too far behind... It will happen though! Oh, and a lot of good SDA stuff.

I'd be interested to hear some more details on what you're using...i.e.:
what software?
do you have an upgraded soundcard?
Thanks! -

It's not really a project if it doesn't take at least a year!
BTW Count me in on a copy of the CD. -
No software at all. This is vinyl as it really sounds through great equipment. I've had some luck in recording in such a fashion that the CD's actually comes across as the real equipment does. Now, hopefully soon I'll get a little breathing room so I can share it.

I'm just using an older Sound Blaster Live card, that i am feeding my MMF-2.1 and Parasound PPH-100 into.
I then record the audio at 48Khz/24bit using Adobe Audition 2.0 and then do the restoration which involves removing an remaining snaps, pops, and hiss. It's really quite amazing how good the end results are. Later I might upload a FLAC file of one of the songs I have done.
It's really a lot of fun to play around with.

Funny someone found this as I remembered it a few days ago for some reason. I had made a "sample" sampler back when I had this idea and it is still my favorite demo disc to date.Vinyl, the final frontier...

Oh man, thats too bad. I'll have to put together another one for you.
This was a great idea, hard to believe I haven't followed through with it. I have been prefering all my recorded LP's over any purchased CD. Every now and then I find a new song that would be added to the play list. Some day...Vinyl, the final frontier...

I keep running into more and more cool LP songs. I'll have to release a box set if I ever do this! The original intent was to let people know what vinyl sounds like. At this point almost everyone has a turntable anyway...Vinyl, the final frontier...

when chuck does finish his masterpiece it will be worth the wait...it's been 5 or 6 years:eek: since he converted my LPs to CD..even now when i hear the slight crackle on the start of a tune, i know i'm in for some good listening..there's a quality to these recordings that was preserved in the transfer...i don't know if it's soundstage or what..the speakers just sing a little more when these recordings are played....some are quite surprising in the sonics dept

A CD of vinyl isn't as good as the vinyl itself, however it sounds much better than most standard CD's.Vinyl, the final frontier...
