Xbox 360 to support both HD formats

It looks like MS is in a win-win situation. A rep said the 360 would support HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

If they are going to do this seems kinda cheap to make people pay for the platform then for the add-on drive. Kinda like a marketing ploy to hit the market first to gain support before ps3 even though you dont have all the peices together yet. But maybe that is smart of them, who knows.

It could be a marketing spin, since MS will sell an external (add-on) HD-DVD drive to Xbox360, instead of a build-in (internal) drive. So, it doesn't really matter who makes the drive (HD or BR) as long as it has the right interface (assuming USB, somehow), then both format can play through Xbox360.

This is not true. They are making a HD DVD add on this year. J Allard said in japan that a Blue Ray add on might be made if it wins the format war, but microsoft press agents quickly stated that they only back HD DVD. Cearly J Allard was being a little too honest here.... xbox 360 is only HD DVD unless HD DVD dies, in which case they will support whatever is profitable.

Yep, and Sony would be more than happy to let microsoft use blu-ray as it would be one more nail in the coffin of hd-dvd. The hd-dvd add-on will have to be cheap since stand alone hd-dvd players are already rumored to be $499 at the lowest when they come out. Would have been a no brainer to buy the 360 if it was internal.

That's one patient update for a year old thread. They sure haven't sold many of the hd-dvd add on drives either. The CES hd-dvd camp reported as of January 5th, there were a total of 175,000 hd-dvd players sold in north america and this included stand alones, computer drives, and the 360 add-on. So the total number of add-ons sold through Christmas was probably 100,000 or less. And that's for over 5 million 360s sold in north america.

I thought Xbox 360 has outsold PS3 so far 3to1.And I hear PS3 sales are wayyy down as far as the projected sales thought.If Sony doesn't get their asses in gear and start making games that are equal in quality to the Xbox games they are going to lose their butts on this one.Everyone I know has bought both consoles,now we are selling 1.The PS3.I don't see enough difference in blue ray and HD dvd's to warrant the indisputable buying of the PS3.Xbox 360 games are the ****,and I know,I know,wait a year or two.Whatever! I want my games now so does every red blooded american gamer.I say HD dVD lives forever and Sony loses their asses on the PS3 console.

Go to CNNmoney.com as of Dec.8th 2006 microsoft sold way over their estimated sales and Sony sold over 200,000 units less than projected and those sales are falling continually.It's in black and white.So if you are in Sony denial then you can stay there,my opinion is Xbox rules the game world,Wii is selling big because it's so cheap,and Sony was a big marketing hype that is falling on it's face.And again,this is all in black and white!

Nice to have a rep on this board. Scottvamp's a good guy too. If it makes you guys feel any better, my 3 year old says, "Xbox 360!" everytime I boot up the ps3. The 360 does have his cars game afterall...

I'm not doubting you since I've read articles myself that have moved forcasts downward to 4 million ps3s sold by the summer and 10 million sold by year's end with another 11 million sold next year. May not sound like it, but those are significantly less than originally forcast. Still probably on par or a little better than what the 360 can do with all the new competition.

But do you have a link? I can't seem to find the article and I've tried several searches.

I wasn't talking about links to old paper comparisons. That article is from May of 2005. Looks like it's time for you to look up some new reviews.

In anycase, I found the CNN article and you've misrepresented it.

It only talks about November numbers when both the Wii and the ps3 launched. They only sold 195,000 'cause that's all they made and could ship, not because people didn't want to buy them. Same thing with the wii at 476,000. So saying the 360 with 511,000 units shipped 'beat' them is just rediculous. The other consoles sold out their entire stock and couldn't meet demand and combined they still outsold the 360 which still had stock on the shelves.

And the real winner from the period in your article is...

the ps2 at 663,000 units sold. The 360 couldn't even beat sony's last generation console this Christmas with plenty of stock on the shelves and GOW. Which console is falling on it's face? Lol...:D.

Actually the article ended rather negatively for the 360, suggesting that people wanted handhelds instead of 360s. From the article:

I just bought a 360 after having only Sony consoles the last 2 generations..I never cared about the Xbox or nintendo. The PS2 had all the games I wanted..

So for me to actually buy an Xbox 360 is pretty significant..Microsoft seems to really be poised to take over the realm this generation..I could be wrong..nobody knows...so it really isn't worth bitching about yet..
