Hi guys. Can a DVD-A be played in a regular DVD player, that doesn't have the SACD/DVD-A inputs?

A DVD video player will not play a DVD Audio disc, at least not the so called hi-rez music layer.Political Correctness'.........defined

If you can find a 2 channel layer on a DVDA it won't play on a DVDV, to the best of my knowledge.Political Correctness'.........defined

Check the information on the jewel case. A good number of DVD-A disks, but not all will play in standard DVDV sound mode. The jewel case usually has the information under "Disc Content". It will list: Advanced Resolution Sound 48 kHz/24 bit, Advanced Resolution Stereo 48kHz/24 bit, and Dolby Digital & DTS 5.1 surround. The latter will use your usual DVD-V sound processing, not the advanced resolution. You will also see the Dolby digital and dts logos on the disc. Many of my DVD-A discs have this multi disc content. Check before buying, they are all labeled.Carl

true... some DVD-a discs do contain a 5.1 DD or DTS layer. and will play in most any regular DVD player.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I'm pretty sure that its a requirement to have at least the Dolby Digital track to match the High Rez tracks. So to answer the original question, Yes, it will play, but you won't get the high rez.For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
Cool! Thanks everybody!!!
The specific one I'm talking about is the Eagles Hotel California. I'm thinking of getting it used for my brother.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
But the DD, DTS are 5.1 tracks. How is a 2 channel DVD player going to replay those?Political Correctness'.........defined

Don't just about all DVD players have toslink and/or coax digital outputs? Yes, you won't be able to play DD or DTS through the analog outs, but for what he's wanting, a digital connection should work just fine... -
He will just need to hear it in stereo. The DVD player is hooked into a 2 channel Rotel receiver. I don't think it has a digital connection since it is 16 yrs old.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2

Most, if not all DVD players will downconvert normal DD or DTS 5.1 to the stereo outputs of the DVD player. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

I thought 16 year old DVD's were called Laser Discs!!!!!!!!!
Time to upgrade that bad boy, oh yea, speaking of upgrades, have I mentioned the warm soft glow of a sleek, well built, muscular tube, lady Frizz!!!!
Can you hear me now!!!

LOL! Sigh!
Lets try this again. The receiver is 16 yrs old! Actually it's a pre-amp by Rotel, hoooked into an amp also by Rotel. I don't think DVD's existed back then, everyone was raving about cd players! I don't think HT existed back then, or was so expensive it wasn't on anybodys radar!
Mark is working slowly on upgrading, and I don't think tubes are on his mind either
As for me, I get turned on by well built, muscular steel boxes that have tons of power in them. 200 watts minimum!!! MMMM OH YES!!!!reeltrouble1 wrote:I thought 16 year old DVD's were called Laser Discs!!!!!!!!!

Circuit city here doesn't even carry DVD-a or SACD anymore. They stopped early last year.
Best Buy isn't adding any new DVD-A or SACD's here either.. and have lumped them together with the Dual Disc's.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

i've come to the conclusion that if you use a quality CD player and a well recorded CD then that is good enough.
-
 Wrong
I bought around 20 high rez discs last month.
CD is dead, MP3 is where its at, its "good enough". And you can dance in the street while watching that 1.5 inch screen on your cell phone!!!
The only thing that I smell is negativity, oh yea, Vinyl is dead too, nevermind the fact you can buy it too.

I think SACDs and DVD-A are going to be with us for a while, if not a long time. It's true that it did not become an I-Pod type success. However there is a lot of stuff out there, more every day. Most of it suited to the more mature (hate to say older) listerner of jazz, classical or easy listening. This is the market. Medium to high end audiofiles appreciate the uncompressed sound in two channel and in multi channel (to each his own). Many high end players have incorporated SACD and DVD-A into their products.
Toshiba and Sony have almost guaranteed the continued use of these formats because of the blu-ray HD product development. A lot of buyers will remain on the sideline because there will probably not be a clear winner for sometime if ever.Carl -

And as far as Sony/Phillips original intent with SACD is concerned, ("The succesor to the CD" was their own words) the fact that in 7 LONG years the format hasn't made a dent of any kind in mainstream society (nor Toshibas DVD-A), from that standpoint alone the high-res formats have failed miserably.
Hey look! 5 discs are coming out next March! WAAA!!! Awesome!!! -
Why are you worried about March, you already said CD is good enough for YOU, I guess you must of bought the other oh, what is it 3000 SACD discs available. I presume your on the board at Sony/Phillips you know what their going to do apparently. So the five coming out are nothing to you, why are you posting at all.
Your post is beneath your usual helpful self, this thread was started by Frizz asking a question, you want to talk about smelly things then go start your own thread.
You may need a break.
RT1 -
i was being sarcastic about March- or any month for that matter. I've been an High-Res music supporter since dia uno back in 1999 with the SCD-1. As a result I'm extremely frustrated with Sony b/c it's the people who buy the discs from both camps that are doing all the hard work in keeping these formats alive. Sony/Phillips is doing $hit. Chalk up one more for Toshiba and DVD-A. You're right maybe I should have just started my own thread- wait, i've done that already.
As far as needing a break- no $hit- Spring break is right around the corner. -
Still having problems with that SACD player, eh Andrew?
BTW, it's my understanding that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are geared towards video as opposed to audio.Political Correctness'.........defined

i think a high-res disc swap program (in spirit of the cable swap) might be a good idea..
