Back in ?71 when this album was released (other than wondering if I?d be drafted), I remember thinking is that Mercury running over their hands? Having worked with molten lead I quickly ruled that out. When I was a kid, I had some Mercury in an old chemistry set and thought it was the coolest liquid. There was some other stuff that pops thought was too dangerous for me and took it away.
The folks that took the album picture had no problems with naked children crawling on cold rocks, having their young photography assistant bare her **** for the Cochise / Cochise album cover, asking band members to jump in a pool without asking if they could swim, and throwing paint into an old bomb crater (or at each other) behind their studio to get that just right dispersement for an album cover (like Be-Bop Deluxe / Drastic Plastic or Space / Deliverance). So yes, it could very well have been the element Mercury.
Anyway, yes, it is a Hipgnosis cover and they did two for the band. (Only ~250 covers to sort through, or use the following clue). This is the sophomore release for the band. I would have NEVER gotten this one except for the fact that I just ordered The Stewart Copeland Anthology which has different cover art, but shows him carrying the same case and stick (umbrella?).
