Here's my dilemma.

Currently I work 75 miles from home. The morning commute is 1.5 hours on average and the drive home is 2+. I've had enough and told my boss I need to find a job closer to home. I love my job and who I work for I just hate the commute. The commute in and of itself is not bad, it the sitting in gridlock for a good part of it.

I have a job offer 6 miles from home for a guy I worked for in the past. A good guy but not who I would prefer to work for. But, it's much closer to home and I'd have a very minor commute.

Now, here is what was just thrown at me. My current boss has offered for me to work from home 1 day for certain, most likely 2 days a week, plus leaving a couple hours earlier on the days I do come in the office to avoid the bulk of the grid lock.

My salary would remain the same between the two jobs. I do have a company Silverado in which everything is paid for. The new job would give me a car allowance and gas card so I'd have to buy a truck.

I am torn. What would you do?

seems simple to me. with all the changes your current employer will hook you up with, it's a no-brainer. :)

Nothing's much worse than not liking who you work for........If you've got that and are ok with the few adjustments that they're offering you, I'd say at least give it a 2-3 month trial to see if it's ultimately going to work for you.........you don't have anything to lose to see if it works for ya.

Seems that your current employer cares , a phrase that I manage by everyday,I read in a book about management,,,,"they don't care how much you know, until they know how much You care"-I would stay with the current employer, just my .02 :)

Totally agree, current employer. Happiness is SOOOOOOOOOO important in a job. Sounds like you would not be happy moving on. As well, it sounds like your current employer likes you as he is making additional allowances. That says something IMO. Good luck and Happy New Year.

From what you have given in the question I have to say the current job. (And a good car stereo to help you pass the time.)

Is longevity of employment with either boss a question? Something to consider.

ron, had you not mentioned the added benefits your boss is gonna give you, i'd obviously tell you to work closer. i was just imagining 2+ hours worth of driving. that just plain sucks. plus, time on the road is time one is exposed to potential accidents. whatever you choose, stay safe on the roadways. and that goes out to everyone here.

If you don't mind driving the other 3 days into work, I would say to stay where you are.

If those three days are going to be horrible, then go with the other one.

But as someone else said, try it out first, you can always move on later.

Looks like you would just be trading one form of aggravation for a worse form of aggravation if you took the new job.

With the current job, you just have the aggravation of the commute, which adds another 3.5 to 4 hours to what I assume is an 8 hour day. Therefore, your real workday is 12 hours, 33% of which is spent doing something you don't like. The aggravation of the current job is mitigated by:

    1. A job and boss that you like (which is like gold).
    2. A boss that seemingly likes you and is willing to work with you regarding your commuting issues.
    3. A company vehicle and paid gas/insurance/maintance. The monetary value of the "free" vehicle is probably equal to or is greater than the extra time spent commuting. One way to figure it out is to multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours spent commuting per year, then compare it to the yearly costs you would incur in purchasing, operating, and maintaining a truck.

With the new job you have a trivial commute, but you would be spending (I assume) 8 hours a day with someone you would prefer not to be with.

Let's see: 4 hours of aggravation on the road (which you will not have to do everyday) vs. 8 hours of potential aggravation every day plus the cumulative detrimental psychological effects of being in an unwanted situation. The new job may get to be so unpleasant that it might require an additional 4 hours of "unwinding" after work just to "return to normal". In which case, you would be back to the 12 hour day of the current job, which would mean 12 hours of aggravation per day compared to the 4 hours that you currently experience.

    I'd stay put.

Stay put. Being happy with your job is WAAAAAYYYYYY important. If he's willing to let you work from home one or two days a week, plus let you leave a couple of hours the days you do come in, gives you a company vehicle, it's a no-brainer in my opinion.

Is longevity of employment with either boss a question?
Both are about the same. But, with my current job the prospect of good bonuses are there where with the new company they would not be, at least for quite some time.

Thanks again all, it sure helps the decision making process.

Ive had a lot of jobs that I hated and they made me miserable on a daily basis. Even on the weekends I was a grumpy ****.

Ive had like 3 jobs ever that I enjoyed and liked all the people. The one I have now is that way. I actually dont mind going into work and no more post-weekend depression.

If you like your current job and the people you work with and theyre willing to hook you up with company car and letting you work from home a day or two a week I think that says they think as much of you as you do of them.

    Stay put.

When I used to drive an hour each day I started the car audio thing. Truthfully, I got to where I looked forward to driving both ways. When my company moved 15 minutes away from my home I pretty much lost interest.

One thing I really liked was that I felt as if I had made a real commitment by driving that far and it seemed to help my work habits. Another was that I would wind down on the way home. Now I often find myself annoyed or still thinking about work when I get home. There are plusses both ways.

Traffic in Socal is probably the singlemost reason that I will never consider living in that place. I have no problem going there to work for week long trips at a time, but by Monday afternoon, I'm itching to get back outta dodge. (no i don't have any warrants)

Traffic is about the one and only negative thing I'd have to say about the area. As with anywhere you live there are pros and cons bu, I could never imagine living anywhere else.

I also like driving, it's the sitting part that's painful. Leaving early on the days I do come into the office will help reduce a lot of that.

Yep, I drive an hour each way to work, 6 days a week. That's the reason I got back into car audio again. I'll have my system installed in the Mustang next week. I have to get another sub and a sealed enclosure for them. I'm gonna run two 10"s. I'm contemplating selling the MMC6500s and getting a set of the SRs to replace them. I wonder if the momos could be put in the rear for some fill and how they would mesh with the SRs????? Nah!!! Noone but the kids would ever ride back there anyways, they're the only ones thgat can fit.

The drive does allow me to wake up before getting to work and wind down a bit on the way home. Good tunes helps that out. Sometimes, though, Ilike to just listen to the V8 purr in both the Dakota(4.7 with Flowmasters) and the Stang. I haven't had the exhaust done as of yet on it.
