You don't exactly get the 5.1 fancy stuff but you'll escape the home theater in a box crap. You'd probably want to add something like a HSU STF-2 ($399 new - cheaper at retailers) because the mite's won't really dig too deep.
But those mites are still pretty large. Pretty much the same size as the RTi4 with their 5.25" woofer.
How about going the way of klipsch? I would suggest a Klipsch Quintet III or the RSX4 or RSX5 satellites.
RSX
Klipsch Cinema 10 (with large RSX-5 speakers):
Cinema 8 in black (with midsized RSX-4 speakers):
Cinema 6 in white (smaller RSX-3 speakers):
The retail prices for the speakers (Cinema which includes the subwoofer) range from 950$ for the 6, $1195 for the 8, and $1545 for the Cinema 10.
Each Cinema has it's own subwoofer. The 6 has the RSW8 (8inch), the 8 has the RSW10 (10inch), and the Cinema 10 has the RSW12 (12inch subwoofer).
You can find these a LOT cheaper through AcousticSoundDesign.com if he sells them.Magico M2, JL113v2x2, EMM, ARC Ref 10 Line, ARC Ref 10 Phono, VPIx2, Lyra Etna, Airtight Opus1, Boulder, AQ Wel&Wild, SRA Scuttle Rack, BlueSound+LPS, Thorens 124DD+124SPU, Sennheiser, Metaxas R2R -

My wife and I had similar agreements years ago when our life was simple. In those days our biggest conflict was picking a restaurant on Saturday night. Then came kids and that changes everything. I know you have probably heard it before, I never believed it myself, but - perhaps sadly - it's true. For instance: After recently rediscovering simple stereo music in our living room away from the continuously play of kiddy DVD's and games in the family room, I was all excited buying a new stereo receiver for the living room. But, the reality is the money I was going spend on a new receiver is now going to replace our daughters electronic keyboard with a real piano. So now, occasionally I get a chance to my little Onkyo powered RT-7's. The rest of the time I get to hear a couple little girls struggle though jingle bells; which is truly priceless!
That said, the only observation I would like to share is whatever phase of life your in. Enjoy it! Because it will change more quickly then you can blink an eye.
As for replacing HT speakers, I'm still at a loss. One side of me wants to make it simple with a 2.1 system, another side says small and after watching "An evening with Rod Stewart" last night on PBS, yet another says do it right. Guess I'm being to critical or cheap; but, I have yet to hear a small satellite system I like. And if that's the case, I'm going to use what we have. Because the kids could really care less. However, I really do appreciate the ideas shared here. I'm going to try investigate Mites further. But, I'm beginning to believe my best course of action will be to do nothing until after the plasma/lcd update. -

Just curious if you have had the chance to hear the Polk RM10s and RM20s? I'm not a fan of sub/sat systems either, but I have to say that the current Polk systems are very impressive. They are one of the few subwoofer/satellite systems that I have heard that has respectable midrange capabilities. They are really quite amazing for their size.HT

I haven't because local shops don't carry them. I may try ordering from crutchfield for thier return policy.
Reaper,
I do spend a lot of time with them. My wife and I wouldn't have it any other way. Our kids (7&10) have never had a baby sitter other then daycare - we both work - and grandma and grandpa. We figure by the time their 14 or so, they won't want us around. -
